I was quite surprised and happy that the cranes allowed me to get this close to them. Remember, 500mm lens, so this is I'm guessing, around 150 feet or so. I approached through cover and the reeds and grass there are almost eye-high but I wasn't fooling myself into thinking I was actually hidden. They knew where I was every step of the way. Shortly after this, Gracie got too close to them for comfort and they flew off.

Ah, I wouldn't say any really. As for the focus, absolutely. I'm not sure if you saw that 500mm lens I got from Mike (me other bud Mike) but man, really, it's a foot long so just imagine you're shooting through a paper towel roll, and your target is like, a city block or two away from you. Practice practice practice! It is a lens that I obviously prefer to be able to use a tripod with.
