Giant friggin millipede

saw this fella at the lake, striding across the hiking path. At least 3 inches long! and 1/4 inch wide. I played with it only a little cause I didnt want to risk pissing it off (from what I understand they can secrete a toxin from between their segments) but it was active enough to curl up and stuff, it was fun.

i think its more of a musk smell. its the centipede thats danguers or able to leave a welt.

hmmm, unfortunately for me to be motivated to take a picture of a centipede it would have to be dead squish.

Nope. i had these guys as pets and they excrete cyanide as a defense. it smells foul and tastes bad and it is enough to make most predators ill not dead (most) but they will not eat one again :)

maybe I should try keeping a few? I don't know what they would eat though and if they smell. bugs can be stinky some times.

unless you anger them they do not get all stinky and they eat dead veggies. which makes them great to have in a terrarium in the kitchen. like i did.

yeah i want to go get some more myself. Mine died over the summer cause i could not keep the enclosure moist enough for them. but then this summer was a killer

Different millipedes may secrete different stuff. The African Giants that are the most common pet variety are not very toxic at all. I don't know about these sort. I'd a picked that up, though. :3

I see those all the time. I did come across a more interesting flat-backed millipede once.
