La Malva Setting
In the early years of Everton's settlement by humans, many monsters and evil from other sentient races were never kind to them, and made survival in those lands a difficult process to say the least. However, humanity has always prevailed. However, none of these times of strife were as brutal as the reign of Lasrend, the self proclaimed Goddess of Undeath and Queen of Retal. Written on the edges of recorded history in the Everton Archives, many documents describe the time spent under the thumb of the damnable Dracolich. Yet few exist that tell of her origin, as her draconic natures makes it difficult to know, much like many other notable dragons of La Malva. And her being the only Soul Dragon known to exist, confuses things even further.
Some scholars theorize she was once the protector of The Wailing Wood, before it was corrupted by The Rift Walker. Others say there once were other dragons like herself, but they were either wiped out or stay in hiding. Nothing is confirmed, but nothing about her is free of speculation. One thing not for debate however, is that she was able to lord over humanity due to their primitive understanding of magic and technology at the time of her arrival. Placing her cult of fanatic Kobold followers in positions of power, and setting herself on top of it all, and worshipped as a goddess by all under her. However, vanity and hubris would ultimately be her downfall, as is the case for many. Formed by Dwarf, Elf, and Man, a sizeable army of priests, clerics, and paladins following the teachings of Cer, used her divine gifts to push through Lasrend's undead hoards and vile fanatics to confront the dragon herself.
How these forces were able to stand against her power, even with their divine magic, is currently lost in the vast archives. But the ending of the conflict is common knowledge to many of those who choose to read themselves on the history of Everton. Sealed in The Undead Queen's Crypt, lays a coffin. And in that coffin are the many bones that make up the body of Lasrend, chained heavily closed with her twin phylactery sealed within two ornate statues. Unable to move, but still barely alive for over two thousand years of imprisonment. Many of her cult members, entombing them selves around her sealed coffin, awaiting the day their 'goddess' will rise from her coffin and raise them to serve her in death.
While many write off Lasrend as forever entombed, rumors spread of her cult's activity continuing from a elusive building known as The Well of Souls. It is said that her most trusted of servants, a kobold known as Greex the Caretaker, still runs a sect of the cult from there and sacrifices unsuspecting travelers to bind their souls to the well. From one of the few survivors of such an attack, it is said that Greex wishes to free Lasrend by brining the collected souls to her crypt, to nourish her starving soul, and give her the power to break free of her restraints. Should such a day ever come, that Lasrend rises from her imprisonment, she will surely destroy Everton in a fit of vengeful rage. And all that can be done currently, is to prepare for that possibility.
