UTO - Back to Basics part 9
Eric's weekend was now ruined as he walked into the base's medical wing. He was going to get this whole mess over and done with. All the halls huge compared to himself as he trekked across catwalks. Harsh white covered everything around as Eric finally made it to his door.
"Well, Damn it's room 203..." Eric sighed having every instict telling him to ditch this place. A deal was a deal, both ends must be upheld. He wouldn't dig his shallow hole any deeper doing something stupid. The young doctor in white robes suddenly beat him in opening the door before him. Eric jumped as this doctor just rolled his eyes problely used to this then most.
"Eric Shepard, right?" The doctor asked in a formal tone. Eric nodded pulling out is ID card and dogtags for proof. "Right this way then Private." As the doctor guided him to a surgical cot gesturing to lay down.
Eric fight scared but kept focus on his breathing laying down on the bed, the doctor asked him to turn over. Now face down it began to shock Eric as he realized it was going directly into his brainstem. That little chip for mech operations, as going into his brain stem. He wanted to run, to flee such a crazy idea! But everyone else had it came out perfectly fine or better after this operation.
"Hey babe." Emily was here for him at least. It calmed him a little but he would still rather nor get such a surgery if it weren't nessasary. But Eric would muster a smile for her of all people.
"Hey Emily, So what do they do during the surgery?" He'd want to know just what his brain may go throught with all of this mess. Emily relaxed thinking up her reponse.
"A quick cut and a few wires after that they stitch it back up! Real simple and you'll be under for all of it." She made it simple since most of techinal stuff was likely a little too much.
Eric thinking on it was very happy to hear he would be asleep and it wasn't too crazy, yet it was the most vital part of the human brain still. One wrong move and 'Eric shivered at thought of a instant death only seconds or less even. The doctor came back in wheeling in a cart of medical equitment just for him.
He looked over his clipboard. "Shepard could you... Wait." The doc was confused looking over both names. Didn't take long as he contiuned on. "Ah, You're married. That makes sense now." He chuckled to himself. His surgery was about to begin.
"Ya' know, I actually got devoiced when the invasion happened?" He jokingly asked. The two before him shook their heads.
"Of course not. But I'll say to was comedic timing if not a punch line from God." He laughed getting the tank of sleeping gas ready. Emily quickly stepped into action helping to get the mask over Eric's nervous face. The mask hissed out the gas making him drousey slowly setting his mind into a forced sleep. Emily saw his eyes shut finally going to sleep as she gave a thumbs up to the doctor.
"Ok, lets start the surgery Nurse." The doctor was ready to start making the cuts nessary for the small black chip's placement. Operating so close to such a vital part of the human body was still nerve racking beyond nearly anything else. Eric stayed lost in sleep floating within his own head. Emily watched over him knowing full well he'd be in safe and precise hands. The doctor and nurse now happy this surgery was a simple success only now waiting for the sleeping gas to ware off. In a few hours Eric was going to adjust to a lot very quickly.
Eric woke up in the hospital ward slowly opening his eyes. Even the dimmed lights were blinding as he blinked to adjust. His hand shot up towards his neck feeling skin and shaved hair. 'Well nothing so far...' He thought till reaching where the chip was, the sudden texture of plastic startled him a little. He breathed relaxing himself, The surgery was over and he was alive. When Eric closed his eyes it flash a quick brust of an image, almost seeming like line of code in blue then darkness. His brain manged to see that from pure seconds? The man had keen reaction time but that's how he survived afterall. Eric decied to test the rest of his body, everything seemed to work just fine. It all felt so, so freash to his mind and very clear.
He wanted to test one of the many rumors about the implants, could they really control the TV? Eric rubbed his head then focused on the TV hanging on the wall infront of him. As he thought about turning it on he chose a channel. A few second, nothing happened. Eric relaxed himself thinking how cool it would been. Then the black screen came to life on the channel he picked.
"Holy shit!" He exclaimed happily clapping his hands together in glee. "It works! Awesome!"
Soon enought a nurse heard him amazed over his ablitly to control the TV, a simple but great little test that worked. Eric was too deep thinking about other ways to see how this nero implant worked. Then the nurse coughed getting him to notice he wasn't alone anymore.
"So I take everything is going well Mr..." She glanced at her clipboard. "Mr.Shepard?"
"Yep!" Eric smiled like a kid enjoying his new found abilities. "What time is it?" He asked.
"About noon now, Lunch will be here pretty soon." She seemed to be looking him over for anything likely noticing he was fine. "Call if you need help and rest a while long, ok?"
"Got it. I'll wait till lunch." Eric felt just, well more alive was the only way to descride it.
With that the nurse left his room as he now sat alone again. He kept rubbing the spot where his inplant was. It felt strange yet not too noticeable really. Soon he'd be in a mech suit with Jackson cleaning the bathrooms. He laughted, at least he had the option of a badass mech now. He could at least enjoy being able to walk him around base and have a little fun.
