Maua is a female meerkat born into a group known as the Udevu Mob. She was the runt of her litter and most of her family members didn't expect her to last long, as she had a hard time keeping up with her family when she was a young pup. But surprisingly, Maua makes it to adulthood and ends up becoming a babysitter for her younger siblings.
When Maua was reaching adulthood, her mother Halili was sadly killed by a bird of prey. Being the oldest female in the group at the time, her older sister Via seized dominance and became the group's new leader, while Maua stayed in her subordinate role. After her father Ago and her two littermate brothers leave the group to go roving, two roving male brothers named Zahor and Yousuf manage to join the group, with Via taking the older of the two brothers as her mate. Maua later becomes a babysitter once again when Via gives birth to a large litter of pups, but she wasn't to remain a subordinate for long...
One day, Via ends up being killed by a predator while the Udevu is out foraging. Amid the ensuing chaos, the group ends up encountering a deadly cobra. And after helping her family drive off the dangerous reptile, Maua becomes the Udevu's new leader. Under her leadership, the Udevu grows to become one of the largest and most successful meerkat mobs in the area. As a dominant female, Maua is fearless, tough and formidable in battle, especially if you tried to mess with her children.
Maua's reign came to an end when she succumbed to a cobra bite that she received while defending her family. After her death, her daughter Raquell became the next leader of the Udevu.
I got inspired by KalahariMeerkatfan on DA to incorporate Meerkat Manor into my TLK universe. Here's a ref for a fierce girl that many of you might recognize: Flower! I'll probably get to drawing some of her other family members sometime in the near future, but for now feel free to guess who's who based on the African names I gave them. 😉
BTW Maua is also a great-grandmother of Timon in my headcanon. More on that later.
