I find it helps to add a flat shading pass beforehand anyways to give it the proper color depth, but it's very time consuming and I'm not sure it looks that much better. Still, I appreciate the complement. Personally, I kinda like everything above the knees, but everything below kinda falls apart and looks crappy and awkward. But that was true for pretty much every step of this picture!
