Trap

The star was a dim red dwarf less than eight light years from Sol and named Wolf 359 for some reason known only to antiquity. After Lalande, now being fortified by the Kashlani, it was the final bastion before the Confederate Fleet’s primary base at Centauri.
The Empire expected heavy resistance and allocated two entire fleets to taking the volume of space around the star.
***
The kangaroo stretched and cracked her back. The tactical plot glowing all about her displayed what passed for the Wolf System. Four large habitats orbited the dim red star; one was a mining concern, taking advantage of the photosphere’s relatively cool temperature to extract various chemicals. Another was a civilian port, and the final two were a naval base and attendant shipyard.
The doe smiled as the first signs of the oncoming assault appeared at the edges of the plot and glanced over her shoulder at her aide. “Are we ready?”
“Yes, Admiral,” the maned wolf replied. He turned and gestured to the technicians gathered at one end of the flagship’s command center.
They set the plan in motion.
***
The kam extended his fingerclaws and scratched the fur under his skin. He was the overall commander of the strike force assigned to take Wolf away from the Terrans. Intelligence reports indicated that the Confederacy was allocating an entire fleet to hold the system.
Sensor readings were in complete agreement with the intelligence.
“Gartabin,” the admiral said, “relay to all ships to have them outphase in standard englobement formation. We’ll trap their ships neatly.”
“Ulnt, Frelen.” The captain flicked his tail. “I wonder why the Terrans haven’t placed any ships out of the system to challenge our approach.”
“Ernnh, ulnt. It is unlike them.” The admiral studied the plot again and said, “Relay to these units,” and his tail snaked into the hologram to point each out, “to remain outside the system perimeter as a guard.”
“Yes, Sir.”
***
“They’re outphasing, Ma’am.”
“I see it. Leaving some of their force behind. Sensible of them,” the kangaroo sneered. “Execute, Captain.”
***
As soon as the flagship entered normal space, the Kashlanin admiral was informed that the fleet-sized unit he was expecting to face consisted entirely of small, expendable ships equipped with emitters that simulated a warship’s sensor signature in hyperspace.
Barely a tenth of the two fleets had managed to flee when an elderly Terran destroyer inphased and dove directly into Wolf 359. The resulting explosion destroyed the bulk of two Imperial fleets.
It had been estimated that sacrificing the entire system was a fair trade, to force the Kashlani to pause and think.

My only question is if they have star killing abilities why haven't we seen it before (or did I miss it?) and what keeps either side from doing this to the enemy's home stars?
And even killing a star, unless it kept them from inphasing? The resulting explosion would have been at less than lightspeed, so the further out the better the chance of escape.
And I'm not sure they really want to force the Kashlani to pause and think, what if the final thought is to remove Sol as a problem forever more?

The Terrans attempted to destroy the Kashlanin home system four times, using AI-guided ships. The weapon, code-named Blue Thunderbolt, was also used to destroy the Colonial government at New Horizon.
The explosion sets up a 'ripple' in spacetime that actually moves faster in hyperspace.
The Kashlani have reasons for not denuding this quadrant of the galaxy.

But the Terrans think they do.

I'll have to reread the New Horizon part as I didn't realize/recall it being a star killer.
And if this very thing was done to/at New Horizon, wouldn't the Kashlani have been watching for such an attack?
Yes, I nitpick, looking for flaws/plot-holes (and I'm happy there are those that nitpick at my silly tales. )

And the Kashlani were on the lookout - which is why the four attempts to do the same thing to Gwath ka-shlal failed.

So other than Terra's fleet there's nothing stopping the Kashlani from doing the same to Sol (I assume they have the tech).
Too much the nuclear option, they're again saying 'we consider this acceptable warfare', which might cause the Kashlani to say 'well, if you insist' ...
And if Terra was removed from the picture - would that be enough to end the war? (cut off the head and the body dies ...)

I've touched on this before. The Kashlani believe that they were the first sophont race created, and that the galaxy (at least) is theirs by right; all other civilizations are called Caretaker Races. Not wanting to inherit or possess dead planets covered in ruins, the Empire long ago created a diplomatic corps and a foreign ministry. So, there are philosophical reasons why they won't destroy Terra or Sol outright.
One of the major reasons the Colonies bailed on the Confederacy was that they saw what had happened to their government on New Horizon, and asked themselves "Are we next, if we don't knuckle under?" The inhabitants of the Colonies are more independently-minded than the Coreworlders, so secession was inevitable.
It's a lead-pipe cinch that Selene would capitulate immediately; Terra is visible from their surface, after all. Ares and Afrodite might also cave if something happened to the capital. However, there's a bunch of admirals and generals out there who might go off on their own and become warlords or satraps of this or that bit of the Core.

The New Horizon part: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/33155406/
New Horizon was a small target, and even with expert navigation by the AI there was a vanishingly small chance of missing the dwarf planet. The star it orbited, however, was a spectral class G body similar in some respects to Sol, and there was no chance of missing it.
Blue Thunderbolt Four accomplished the goal of its mission profile by diving straight into the star’s gravity well with its hyperfield at full power.
The star exploded.
So it seems it is a star killer (which I think makes them idiots for using it! )
