As was implied by their having a device used to create up to seven alternate timelines of pregnancies, they dabble in the energies of time, to the point of worship. Gara can be vain in their intellect, though that's not entirely unwarranted given their intelligence.

Unfortunately, their arrogance led to their own destruction.

They had built "Essence Rings" that could act like turbines to the flow of Time. But thanks to a minor misalignment built into their first Ring, each one after it was copied from it, resulting in all having the misalignment. As the Rings ran for thousands of years, it caused an imbalance within the flow of time that built up, resulting it a devastating surge that obliterated the Rings with such force, their shrapnel vaporized everything and everyone.

Except Tokardis and his mate Arfelacas.

They had seen the danger, and used an old Ring to shield their small home, deflecting the surge.

Knowing they were the last of their kind, they would be responsible for trying to resurrect the Gara.

And they decided to do it as fast as possible in the way their people knew best.

This is a smaller example of a Temporal Displacement Pregnancy for a Gara.

And given the circumstances, they will be doing this many, many times.
