That looks pretty close to the original design. Although, Slimes should be pretty easy.
I've never actually played any of the Dragon Quest games, but I have been thinking about it. Which would you recommend I start with? I'm thinking about starting with VIII.

Dragon Quest 8 is the only one ive played so i guess its a good place to start. I was gonna do a long drawn out explanation of the game but i decided not to burden you with all that info unless you want it XP

8 is a great starting point, though you might get a little spoiled by the quality. I haven't played DQ 9 yet, so I can't emphatically say that 8 is the best. But before 9 was released I would have said that overall 8 was the best in the series.

4-6 are also great games to try out. They are old school graphically, but there have been some very good updates for 4/5 on the DS released, and 6 is expected out later this year. In case it helps, DQ4 is my personal favorite of the entire series.

DQ 7 is forgettable. Not bad, just not as good as most that came before it, and what did come right after it.
The various spinoffs are varying degrees of good, none are really bad IMO.
DQ 1-3 (Dragon Warrior on the NES) are all decent, each one getting steadily better.

Hehe DQ 8 is one of the best games in the series, whereas FF8 is one of the worst. Gives me hope for DQ 10 in 2014.

Ugh, having to kill endless amounts of Slimes just to build up in Dragon Warrior for the NES... no wonder I didn't get into RPGs much. :-/
