Thank you to Pisq for commissioning me to bring dimetrodon to my roster!
This design is just an example and not the custom for the client in particular.
Dimetrodon isn't a dinosaur, having existed 40 million years before dinosaurs came to be. It's more closely related to living mammals than it is any reptile.
To recap on what makes classifies an animal as a dinosaur, it's essentially how its limbs align with the body and the presence of a particular hole in its hip socket. Crocodilians, lizards, pterosaurs, marine reptiles (mosasaurs, etc), and synapsids like dimetrodon here have limbs that sprawl to their sides, often with their thigh bones parallel to the ground. Dinosaurs, however, have their legs positioned directly under their bodies.
These give the animals a very different range for motion, with dinosaurs more often being better equipped for running/endurance compared to the swaying side-to-side motion many reptiles would be known for.
Birds however at this point, are widely accepted as dinosaurs! More specifically, avian dinosaurs that descended from a maniraptoran dinosaur, (Dromaeosauridae, troodontidae, therizinosauria) like Archaeopteryx.
Back onto our boy dimetrodon here, there are around 20 different species of dimetrodon described with sizes ranging from small cat to the tips of their sails being about as tall as an adult human. The function of the sail is still up for debate between Paleontologists, with ideas being for thermoregulation, sexual dimorphism/selection, etc.
And that's about as far as I got to learn in a nutshell thus far!
A reminder that though I do my best to triple-check my facts and research as much as I can, I am not a paleontologist, so my word is not definite compared to theirs. However, I do love sharing what little tip of the iceberg I have learned with you all!
I figure this could also be fun for those who are into nerdy stuff like I am AND be useful for people who want to have their sonas/oc based on these animals, even if a fictionalized version.
For all I know no one reads this stuff lmao, oh well. I really enjoy studying this stuff regardless so Imma keep doing it.

Another thing about the difference between Dinosaurs, Mamals & Synapsids is the Skull, is the amont of "holes" behind the eyes, Anapsida have none, Synapsia have one and Diapsida got two.
From what i remember Diapsida went to be the Dinosaur line and Synapsia went to become Mammals, no idea where Anapsida went xD
