Spring, 1366
It was time.
Kharriana’s pair of eggs had a sense of life and energy to them ever since they were deposited in the nest of packed earth nearly 10 months ago, but now they were downright active, shaking and chirping.
They were ready to hatch.
Kharriana immediately got up to check, and within moments Meratezatgh was besides her.
Both dragons have devoted so much energy to reach to this point; Mera had built the nest from driftwood and loamy soil brought up from from the Kern River and had embraced Kharriana while she had lain her eggs, gently rubbing her gravid belly and nuzzling her check through the exhausting effort. Afterwards Mera had gone hunting, laboriously hauling up a massive auroch to feed his mate and allow her rest.
Still despite all his difficulties, the bronze dragon had been satisfied. He could not hope to contribute as much as his love, bearing and then laying out their children, but he would try his best. Mera would do his best to be a good father.
He would provide all the help to his offspring that he never received himself.
Together the two dragons alternated their parental duties, one parent incubating the eggs with their bodies while the other went hunting to feed the other. Kharriana especially guarded their progeny jealously: it was her first time- as she reminded Mera- and she would risk everything to bring them to hatch and raise them to honorable adulthood. Even when it was the bronze dragon's turn to warm their children, the green dragon hovered around the nest as much as possible.
*Rest when you can, my love,* Mera commented. *You need to recover and I will do everything possible to protect our young ones.*
*Two dragons are better protectors than one, my mate.* The green dragon replied with her determined look that brook not argument. *And I would rather die than let anything threaten my children.*
So it had been a long, worrisome wait, but now finally the time had come.
As the pips increased and the eggs shook, Meratezatgh and Kharriana eagerly gathered around the nest to watch, hopeful and slightly nervous. Hatching could always be risky, and if need be they could intervene.
But what Kharriana and Meratezatgh really wanted was to welcome their children as they emerged into the world.
The two eggs were roughly the same size, one slightly larger than the other. Both were shaking, but the larger one seemed more aggressive in its efforts and cracked first. Soon a portion of the shell crumbled inward, and out came a little head, a girl-bronze like her father- taking her first breath of air.
Mera and Kharriana smiled and looked at each other.
*She’s beautiful.* Mera asked.
*She is.* Kharriana beamed.
*What should we name her?*
The green dragon only paused for a moment. *I will name her Rargesteyae, the one of determination.*
*Rargesteyae* Mera mused. *A beautiful name.*
The little brown hatching pushed hard, and soon the egg had all but shattered as she forced her body out of its confines. Kharriana leaned over and licked Rargesteyae clean of anmonitic fluid. The little brown dragon opened her eyes, looked at her parents, and cooed in joy. Then Mera leaned over and gave her a gentle nuzzle.
As Rargesteyae curled up, closed her eyes and rested, the other egg began cracking as well.
The second dragon had a bit of difficulty breaking free of its confines. Small cracks appeared on one part of the shell, then another. The little one was trying all over.
Worried, Mera and Kharriana looked at each other. The hatchling might be too weak to free itself and require intervention break out of its shell, an action which could be dangerous and harm the occupant inside. Even then, a weak hatchling could have deformities that make its survival unlikely.
Just as Kharriana had leaned over to try to pierce a portion of the shell, a strong squeak sounded and suddenly a little head broke out of the egg, a boy-green like his mother-wearing a bit of shell on his head like a hat.
Both Mera and Kharriana breathed a sigh of relief, Then Mera looked at Kharriana.
*A sweet boy.*
*You should name him.*
Mera thought for a momnent. *Asaewath, the one of valor.*
*Asaewath is a good name.* Kharriana exclaimed, gently pushing off a bit of shell still stuck to Asaewath’s face.
The little green dragon also looked up at his parents and smiled, and they responded with nuzzles and licks. Tired from his exertions, Asaewath soon dozed off as well. Mera gently picked up his son and put him besides a snoring Rargesteyae.
A successful hatching. The two proud parents watched their children sleep, beaming at their accomplishment.
*They are both so beautiful.* Kharriana finally exclaimed.
Mera affectionately nuzzled his mate.
*Our children.*
