Okay...first off...I want to say this: I loved this game. I loved Ecco and Ecco: Tides of Time. Both of them were really great games...even if they were as hard as sin. (seriously...health, air, instant squashing...huge fucking levels, mazes in most of them...god it was tough)
And I really wish they'd made a continuation to the series...not stuff like "Ecco Jr." or "Defender of the Future" I mean a 3rd installment to the story of the original and greatest. I mean...it was such a let down...the Vortex queen goes back in time and becomes apart of Earth ecosystem...and Ecco vanishes? Bull.
Really...make a 3rd game...and make it 2D like the others before it. Please! *puppy eyes*

Well...the first game has you playing Ecco. He was a dolphin born with stars on his head which made other think he had some big purpose. One day a storm hits and sucks up a large portion of sea life, including his pod. Heading off to find answers, he meets the Asterite (a swirling helix made up of globes) which has a missing Ecco eventually come upon the lost city of Atlantis where he learns that every 500 years an alien race called the Vortex come to earth to harvest from the oceans (since they had last the ability to make their own food.) He also finds a time machine and heads back 500 million years ago.
Ecco find the Asterite in the past, but it's At first hostile, the Asterite attacks and ecco dislodges one of the globes sending him back to the present time. Going back to return the globe, the Asterite grants Ecco the ability to breath underwater, regenerate lost health, and use his sonar (which only served to talk to friendly sea life and use the map) into a deadly weapon. Ecco goes back in time again, this time to the point when the harvest happened. Fighting through the Vortex ship, he finds the queen and fights her, defeating the bitch and freeing his pod and the other sea life.
Ecco: Tides of Time was the sequel...and...well...it's really complicated. The short version is...the queen is still alive, goes to earth to make a new hive for herself. She destroys the Asterite, stripping Ecco of his powers. Ecco goes all through time, which now has 2 possible ends: A dolphin paradise or a cold dead Vortex infested world.
The game ends with the Vortex queen forced to revert to a larval state, going back in time. There she finds she can't control the lifeforms since they are far more wild and violent I guess...so she assimilates with the life and the Vortex become part of the earth ecosystem. Ecco, who was told to destroy the time machine to preserve life, instead chooses to vanish in the Tides of Time...why...I don't know really...I don't think anyone does.
