I recently took some shots of a local family of California quail: Mom, Pop, and some chicks (the parents took turns perching on the bannister of an old porch railing, while the babies spent a lot of time lurking in the underbrush). I thought it would be fun to combine all three of them into one photo, so here they are.

This is really great. I see juvenile and adult California quail just about every day, but walnuts are rather elusive and their appearance is a special treat.

I'm guessing they must have just hatched not more than a week ago... they look like little fuzzy marshmallow peeps with stripes. :3

It looks like the male might be a young one. I am not an expert, but mature males seem to have a more speckled breast and more "full" coloring.

Mountain Quail are also around here, but I have only seen them after a forest fire and not recently.

You could be right... I have seen some that have a much flashier plumage. He might not even be the parent of the chicks, per se... apparently they're a gregarious critter that likes to form extended "families" where multiple males and females watch out for the young.

Aren't they? I often see the adults when I go out hiking, but this was the first time I've seen any chicks.

Ah, quail. I'm sure to scare up at least a few of these if I go walking through my field. Seeing as I'm so close to California anyway, I suppose it's not a surprise. Might I ask how close you were able to get to take this picture?

We've got bajillions of them around here. :3 I was about 15 feet away for these shots, which was as close as they'd let me get.

There are a ton of them around everywhere they are, I think, but the species seems to be confined to west of the Rockies. Their range does extend quite a bit more north than I would have thought.

A lot of people don't know that Dan Quayle was in fact an entire flock of real live quails zipped into a realistic rubber human suit. :P

At first glimpse, it looked like the head of the baby was all that there was, like just put a couple feet on the bottom. The rest of it blended in the background too much. XD

Baby quails are essentially camouflaged cotton balls, so that's an easy mistake to make. :3
