Silverglass is such a poser. I've had told him to act natural, and not to pose. It's really difficult for a unicorn not to pose before an artist. He said that it is completely unacceptable for artists to depict his kind doing mundane things. For an artist to do so is criminal. ... His alicorn is really sharp, ok?

I actually drew this in reaction of your unicorn skeletal drawings. Unicorns are most insulted when you drew them as horses with a horn. Their anatomy reflects their graceful and nimble nature. It is a small and lean creature with long thin limbs with double ungulates. Unicorns can never be ridden due to their small size and wild nature. So when you put a unicorn next to a horse, you can see how the horse is immediately turned into clumsy and ungraceful gorilla compared to the small, timid unicorn.
I agree that the horse-shaped "modern" unicorn might look clumsy when in comparision to its medieval cousin.
But when it comes to fantasy creatures, there are infinite ways to depict them - all of them equally justified and right, when keeping in mind that they are the product of our imagination and personal aesthetic values. The most important thing is that the many various ideals of the unicorn live on in our art and culture. =)

The same is often asked of dragons... "A dragonrider? But who would be great enough to ride a noble leviathan?" I've never liked fantasy novels where a man has clear and practical dominance over dragons. =/
I think that when riding a dragon, a unicorn or any mythological creature with a personality, there has to be an immense amout of trust and friendship involved for both parts. It's then when the question of authority is put aside and we have a situation where the stronger and bigger one takes care of his or her smaller friend. I think that the rarity of such an union always makes a story worth telling.

I recommend reading this "Unicorn Sonata".
It's about a street-wise girl living in downtown, and one day she is charged with the responsibility of saving the universe of the unicorns and the sicken creatures themselves. I assure you it is not a teenage read. It's really deep.
