Chapter 3.5- We need a mascot?
After checking out the distress call in the Alola region, the Anthros returned back to their base, now with 2 Cosmogs to look after, one by Kat and another by Ben. It wasn’t too much trouble to get the cosmogs settled into the base, though they would tend to cry late at night, which Kat and Ben would have to deal with. The next day the doorbell rang so Kat went to answer the door, though given that the doors were glass, Kat could plainly see that Mr.Universe who had brought the team together and gave them the opportunity to be heroes was the one waiting at the door. Kat quickly opened the door for the turtle,
“Uni? Is there something I can help you with?” Kat asked,
“Nothing in particular my boy, just two things and I’ll be out of your hair. First of all I’d like to congratulate you on answering and handling the distress call,” Uni explained,
“Ah, well it was a team effort,” Kat informed Uni,
“I’m aware, which brings me to the other reason I’m here- I think it would do your team good if you had a mascot,” Uni explained,
“A mascot?” Kat inquired,
“Yes, you know, someone or something that represents your team,” Uni explained,
“Is something like that necessary?” Kat asked,
“Not entirely, though some of the greatest hero teams around have them,” Uni explained,
“Who would even qualify for a mascot?” Kat asked,
“Anyone really, though the best mascots are small and cute,” Uni replied. Kat looked back towards his room, where Starman was still sleeping,
“Well we did obtain 2 Cosmogs while in Alola,” Kat explained,
“Yes I do know about that, however they aren’t eligible to be mascots,” Uni explained,
“Why not? You don’t think they’re cute?” Kat asked,
“That’s not it, they’re adorable, however they’ll eventually evolve into legendary pokemon, which can’t become mascots… well actually, I guess they are mascots, though not in the way we’re talking about with hero teams,” Uni explained.
It was at this time that Panthro was up and approached Kat and Uni,
“What’s going on here?” Panthro asked,
“Ah, Panthro. Just the man I wanted to see, I was just making a suggestion about adding a mascot to your team,” Uni explained,
“A mascot? I don’t think we need one though, I think we’ll do perfectly fine with what we’ve got,” Panthro explained,
“Fair enough, though what if I were to give you an incentive?” Uni offered, causing Panthro to tilt his head,
“What kind of incentive?” Panthro asked. Uni then walked outside without saying another word, causing Kat and Panthro to follow after him. When they got outside, Panthro’s jaw dropped when he saw a very familiar looking metallic tank with a feline-like design parked near the base, while Kat was entirely confused. Panthro spoke with disbelief and joy in his tone,
“My baby! It’s really her, but I thought she was destroyed…” Panthro explained,
“She was, though I have my ways of repairing things that are beyond repair,” Uni explained,
“Wait I’m confused, what is this thing?” Kat asked. Panthro then turned towards Kat as if he had said something blasphemous,
“That isn’t a ‘thing’! That’s the Thundertank, my pride and joy, and the vehicle I used as a mobile base before we got this base,” Panthro explained as he gestured towards the base behind them,
“Indeed, and I’m willing to give it back to you should you add a mascot to your team,” Uni explained,
“Why do you care about this so much?” Kat asked,
“Honestly I don’t, I was just bored,” Uni explained,
“Well how long do we even have to get a mascot?” Kat asked,
“I’ve got all the time in the world,” Uni explained.
Kat and Panthro went back inside the base and started discussing the matter of mascots within the meeting room,
“Kat, we need to get a mascot, I need to get my baby back,” Panthro explained,
“Whatever you say boss,” Kat replied casually,
“Ew, don’t call me boss,” Panthro replied,
“What do you want me to call you while we're working?” Kat asked,
“Just Panthro, whether we’re working or whatever,” Panthro instructed. Kat sighed,
“Ok Panthro.. So how do you suppose we recruit a mascot?” Kat asked,
“I dunno, the last team I was on our leader sort of brought the mascot with him,” Panthro explained,
“I mean we could put an ad out for the position,” Kat suggested,
“That’s not a bad idea, you make some fliers and I’ll have Winston make a Greg’slist ad,” Panthro explained,
“What about you?” Kat inquired,
“I’m not great at writing and I don’t know how to use a computer… well I guess that’s not entirely true, my Thundertank had a computer, I mean like a regular computer,” Panthro explained.
After much advertising, Kat and Panthro began interviewing the mascots,
“Ok so Bubsy, can you give us a reason why you’d make a good addition to our team?” Kat asked,
“Because, what could possibly go wrong?” The bobcat wearing the T-shirt asked excitedly,
“Yeah that doesn’t really answer my question…” Kat commented,
“Now this is what I call a platform game!” Bubsy added,
“What are you talking about..?” Kat asked as he tilted his head,
“Next,” said Panthro bluntly
__
“So uh… Mr…” said Panthro before he took another look at his paper to make sure he read the name correctly,
“-Noid, can you maybe demonstrate some of your skills?” Panthro requested. The strange human-like creature wearing a red costume resembling a rabbit then took out some pizzas from some kind of invisible pocket and laid them on the table before pulling out a mallet and smashing the pizzas into a saucy and cheesy mess, all while laughing maniacally in a high pitched voice,
“Uh yeah.. I don’t think this is going to work, next,” said Panthro.
___
Panthro and Kat stared at the cute small brown creature that looked like his body was made from a sack,
“...did someone leave their toy here?” Panthro asked,
“Nah, that’s Sackboy, he’s a Littlebigplanetian,” Kat explained as he looked over the information on the paper that was submitted,
“I mean… Can he talk?” Panthro asked,
“He doesn’t talk so much as he expresses himself. though I can tell you what is going on in that creative little mind of his,” said a calming disembodied voice, causing Kat and Panthro to do a double take,
“W-What the hell was that??” Kat asked in a panic,
“Now now, there's no need to panic, and there’s even less need for that kind of language. I should start by explaining why Sackboy is interested in the mascot role that was advertised,” The narrator explained before Sackboy used some sort of glowing hologram-like string to paste a heart sticker on Kat’s shirt,
“Cute…” said Kat in mild annoyance since he was wearing one of his favorite shirts, though part of him genuinely meant the comment since he found Sackboy to be adorable. The narrator then continued,
“LittleBigPlanetians are wonderful little creatures who love to express themselves through their creations. So you can imagine how disheartening it is to hear about villains who spend their time destroying things that others worked so hard to create. So using his positivity and creative spirit, I’m sure Sackboy will make a wonderful addition to the-” the narrator tried explaining, but Panthro cut him off,
“Ok I’m sorry, you seem like a nice guy, but I don’t think I can get used to that disembodied voice, it’s freaking me out, Next,” said Panthro.
___
“Woomy” said the Inkling girl,
“Woomy?” Panthro inquired
“Yeah man, Woomy,” said the Inkling girl, her voice resembled gurgling water, though still somehow sounded cute,
“What does Woomy mean?” Kat asked,
“Y’know… it’s just… Woomy,” the Inkling girl explained vaguely,
“Right, so what sort of skills can you bring to the team?” Panthro asked,
“Well I’m an expert markswoman,” said the Inkling girl proudly,
“Oh that’s cool, we could use someone who’s good with guns on the team,” Kat commented,
“You’re good with guns at such a young age? Your world must be pretty chaotic…” said Panthro with an empathetic tone,
“You bet! You should see how much ink covers the battlefield during the turf wars, it gets crazy at times!” said the Inkling girl excitedly,
“Well I think…. Wait.. ink?” Panthro inquired,
“Yeah man! That’s what we use for our weapons,” the inkling girl explained,
“...so basically you have experience with a more hectic version of paintball,” Kat commented,
“I mean I guess that’s one way of putting it…” the inkling girl replied,
“Next…” said Panthro bluntly.
___
Kat’s eyes lit up when he saw a very familiar pink character sit across from them,
“Kirby! I’ve heard of you, and I know all about your adventures,” said Kat excitedly,
“Poyo,” Kirby replied with his usual cute voice,
“What’s with all these mascots using made-up words?” Panthro asked rhetorically,
“Don’t let that distract you, Kirby is actually very powerful, he’s saved entire planets before!” Kat explained excitedly,
“Entire planets? Well alright, that sounds promising,” Panthro commented. Suddenly though, Kirby immediately inhaled Kat, then spat him back out, gaining cat ears and a cat tail in the process,
“W-What the??” said Kat with a surprised tone. Kirby then made a sword appear from nowhere and casually jumped down from his chair and walked out of the room,
“What was that?” Panthro asked,
“I dunno, on occasion he does things that are pretty inexplicable,” Kat explained.
___
“So Arthur, tell us a little about yourself,” Panthro requested,
“I’m willing to fight anything to save the people I care about, be it Ghosts, Goblins, or even the devil himself, no creature of evil is safe from my fury!” said the bearded man wearing knight armor,
“Ah jeez, I’ve heard of this guy…” said Kat with a disappointed tone,
“Oh? What’s wrong with him? Is he not strong?” Panthro asked,
“He is…” said Kat before he picked up a pen from the table and casually tossed it at Arthur, hitting him squarely in the chestplate, and causing the armor to practically jump off of Arthur’s body, reducing him to his underwear,
“But his armor isn’t…” said Kat, finishing his thought,
“Argh! Why does this always happen?!” said Arthur in frustration, causing Kat and Panthro to sigh.
___
“So uh.. Mr.White Bomber-” said Kat before the guy sitting across from them cut him off,
“Please, just ‘Bomberman’ is fine,” Bomberman clarified,
“So Bomberman, what can you bring to the team if we bring you aboard as our mascot?” Kat asked,
“Well let’s just say- if you need a demolition expert- I’m the guy for the job!” said Bomberman proudly as he produced a bomb from thin air, causing Kat and Panthro to jump out of their seats,
“Woah! Put that thing away!” Pantho demanded. Bomberman then spun the bomb on the part of his pink ‘hand’ that would qualify as a ‘finger’,
“Relax, I know what I’m- uh oh,” said Bomberman as the bomb slipped off of his ‘finger’ and to the floor, causing Kat and Panthro to duck behind the table before the bomb went off, thankfully no one was hurt.
___
Panthro and Kat went through interview after interview, though none of them were going any better, until after several interviews the two anthros sat at the table with a dejected vibe,
“This is going nowhere…” said Panthro bluntly,
“Aw come on big guy, we’re sure to find someone as our mascot eventually, we just need to keep looking,” said Kat encouragingly as he put a hand on Panthro’s back,
“I appreciate you trying to cheer me up Kat, but I just don’t think it’s going to happen… I’ve been around long enough to know when something is a lost cause,” said Panthro pessimistically,
“Well how about one more interview for today? If this one doesn’t work we try again tomorrow,” Kat suggested. Panthro sighed,
“Fine, who is the last interviewee?” Panthro asked,
“He’s right here,” said a male voice before a short boy with spiky blond hair and a blue outfit walked into the room and sat across from Kat and Panthro,
“Are you even old enough to be a hero kid?” Kat asked,
“Hey, I’m not a kid! I’m a high schooler!” the boy replied,
“Right, so what’s your name?” Panthro asked,
“Yugi Moto,” Yugi explained,
“And you want to be our mascot?” Kat asked,
“Oh no, not me personally, one of my monsters did,” Yugi explained,
“Your…” said Kat trailing off,
“...monsters?” Panthro finished, though sounding equally confused. Yugi then dug a card out of his pocket,
“Alright Kuriboh, time to make an impression!” said Yugi to the card. Panthro was about to ask the boy if he was crazy, but then the card glowed and produced a small monster with a body comprised of brown fur, possessing stubby green reptilian arms and legs with long claws, and big purple eyes with light yellow sclera. Kat stared at the monster, the monster stared back, then made some cute noises,
“Awooo, Kuri Kuri,” said Kuriboh, causing Kat to blush. It was this time that Panthro spoke up,
“This little thing wants to be our mascot? I don’t know if-” Panthro tried saying, though Kat cut him off,
“I think we should give him a chance,” Kat suggested, surprising Panthro,
“Really? But you don’t even know what he can do,” said Panthro,
“I know, though I think he has potential, I can feel it,” Kat explained, causing Kuriboh to act bashful. Yugi spoke up again,
“How about you guys give him a shot by bringing him on a mission? If you change you mind I’ll be around to take him back,” Yugi explained,
“Well…. Alright, I guess it couldn’t hurt to try,” said Panthro.
As luck would have it, the next mission for the anthros came later that day, there was a villain attack in Furafin city, and it was time for Kuriboh to prove his worth. Kuriboh could multiply himself hundreds of times over, and even detonate those clones, with Kuriboh’s help, the anthros handled the villain in no time. Thus it was decided, Kuriboh had become the mascot of The Anthros of Justice, and he seemed to become the closest to Kat for a reason that no one was entirely sure of, and Uni kept his word and returned Panthro’s thundertank to him, and so with a new ally and mode of transportation gained, The Anthros become prepared for the next time they find themselves crossing over.
