Yikes! Found this the other day while working in the yard. It's bigger than it looks cause the finger in in the foreground, a bit of a ways from this horror. We were afraid to get too close to it, it had chompy jaws.

haha they're not. Its a type of grub... and you just gotta grab em behind the head so they legs and the head don't get you and just chuck them and its fun to watch them squabble. I know some people have a thing against destroying bugs but... chickens need fed and these are pests.
You... want to kill it because you don't approve of its looks?
hmmmm....
Your country is blessed with a pretty uniquely colourful variety of bugs - particularly coleoptera (beetles). Beetles are fantastic. God must have loved them - 60% of all species on earth are beetles.
A huge powerful glittery beetle thundering about on his business is a real pleasure to behold!

Woah! Lucky you!
Beetle grub - for a pretty substantial beetle. Looks like it's from the scarab family. Too big for a'june bug'. Not the right colour for an elephant beetle - might be a hercules o rStag beetle.
Not dangerous. He just eats roots from grass and shrubs. Utterly harmless. The ground underfoot is ful of them.
Keep him and see what he grows into! I assure you - the result will be pretty! Scarabs are groovy.

You're lucky down there. You have the really goddam huge ones, like you were mentioning. Biggest we get around here are, as I said, the fig beetles. About the size of a half-dollar, green back but nicely iridescent underbelly. Fun to watch but dumb as a bag of rocks. I've literally seen them smack facefirst into a wall and fall down stunned.
our local (West Australian) species tend to be small - but sort of stunning!
