This is a possibly akward one. I used to be friends with this great fan household, full of some of the coolest people I knew. This was drawn during the full flower of that friendship. But my mockery of Cheney and his revolting pet chimp, Generalissimo El Busho, was interpreted as hatred of America (wrong - I hated what they were doing TO America, a country I quite like) by one of the household. I got a note from 'em saying I should never, ever talk to them again.
So I can't ask em if it's OK by them for me to run this fanart I drew for em in better times. How 'bout if they see it, and don't want me to have it here, I'll take it down? Of course, to do that, they'd have to speak to me. Ah, the pitfalls of Drama.

Yaknow, I never understood the whole "If you hate the president of the country then you hate the country". It's an almost disturbingly narrow minded view. A very closed minded view. It's like saying "I hate the new Nissan GTR" and everyone thinking that means I hate fast cars. Or "I hate mac computers" thus that means "I hate the internet"
Like how everyone fears if America gets socialized medicine. I cannot FATHOM why people get so pissed off about that. I can't remember who said it...
"Socialized medicine... yeah it's something Americans hate. After all, it seems these days anything with the word 'social' is a bad thing."
Personally, I have not been to a country with socialized medicine and thought the people were unhappy. Canada, lot of happy people. Iceland, a place a definately hope to visit because some really cool people come from there, for example!
Oh yeah, socialized medicine means higher taxes... even though their healthcare will be covered so if they get cancer or need a transplant that hundreds of thousands of bucks they don't have to suddenly pay... meh... I probably just pissed off a bunch of people. Me, republican, democrat, whatever. if I don't like 'em I don't like 'em. Anyone wants to say I aint American can kiss the Detroit American Muscle floor pan of my car... from the underside of the car.

their mistake is thinking that a socialist system equals free healthcare. while many socialist countries had it, it's not part of the system at all.
either way, what in the world is wrong with it? as you say it's paid for by taxes, so either you pay by yourself, or pay it through taxes.
whatever america does with it, take care the health insurances will not fuck the pople over, raking in the fees and granting nothign for it. germany has at least a catalogue of duties they have to stand in for, however it's slowly diminishing for a number of reasons.

Sorry to bring this up a month after the fact, but, yes, you have to pay for it either way, but it will cost less on average for people to pay for it themselves than it will to pay taxes and have the government pay for it from that simply for the fact that the government adds tons more bureaucracy to the mix.
no need to tell me about the bureaucracy. germany has the count of over 200 different health insurance companies, most of which compete for the same market, some specialize on a specific range of professions... but, still. one of the big problems here is, that medical companies are free to set their prices as they like, and after a ywear of release they may change the package size, and tag a new price on it. needless to say what goes into which direction.
our government tried for many years to lower the general costs within that system; one of the reasons for the problems are low and lowest incomes (you pay the fees according to your actual income. for micro-jobs you don't have to pay anything at all). of course, it takes a lot of money; but honestly, it still beats the majority of people going to work sick as anything because they can't afford the insane fee for a simple examination. making themselves more sick, creating mistakes, infecting co-workers, and so on.
still there are many who go working with a huge cold anyway, fearing for their job. in the end they drop to the ground, and nothing is gained.

Well I'm all for it when it comes to healthcare.
I live in the UK and I'm diabetic, in a country where meds are handed out free already I get extra perks ontop because of the complications of diabetes, like free eye-checks... I'm not sure but it may extend to glasses as well. I'd hate to think how much the meds would have cost me every month if I lived in America.
With regard to the pic though, it's a good one Karno, and really should make people think.
If there is a God, and he were to appear to anyone...
How long would it take to get the poor bastard comitted?

To be honest, I've only noticed the whole "If you hate the president then you hate American and freedom" ideaology in people AFTER Bush got elected.
If I recall correctly, Bush made many connections to if you don't like one thing, you hate america, or you hate freedom while he was president.

Back about six months before the whole healthcare issue hit the public fan, I happened to be reading (in a doctor's office, by coincidence) an article in Time magazine comparing the lifespans in different countries. Although the gist of the article was in a different direction, I still remember noticing that the USA is behind all of the socialized-medicine nations of Europe except one or two of the smallest and poorest ex-communist countries.
Apparently, even poorly managed socialized healthcare is significantly better than our current system. Since I'd like an extra five to eleven years of productive life, I'm all in favor of as much socialized healthcare as we can cram into this nation!

Yeah, one thing I throw at a lot of friends who get mad about the whole socialized medicine "Threat" is that with the level of insomnia I suffer, if I lost my job and health insurance I would probably last a few months before my body begins to shut down. Nervous system issues and such. I'd probably be dead by now. In order to get some kind of government help it'd take so long to sift through the red tape I'd be screwed.
One of these days we all get to get with the times and accept that we may need to do socialized medicine.

The first three choices all sound great! ^____^

You have to turn your life over to Karno for him to have power. This includes bank account numbers, powers of attorney - but he at least will respond to prayer.
Without a power of attorney he's a big floating head. Which actually is an improvement on a lot of current iconography. Big floating head over strung-up decaying corpse anyday.

Holy nut-busters, Karno. When I heard that someone had told you not to send them Christmas cards ever again because you were an evil America-hating communist, I assumed it was a completely different household! I never would have suspected such right-wing dogmatism from that direction! We're a great country, only so long as we're able to see our failings and do better. When we become willfully blind to our evils, we become Zimbabwe. As others have said, I haven't heard from the crew in years, either, but they haven't told us to stop sending yule cards. I think it's fascinating how I can identify the members of the household through your cartoon portrayals of them in unicorn form. Truly you are a god.
It's a common failing of the human condition. Too often we tend to interpret things in an exaggerated manner do to how our opinions shade our perspective, which only magnifies things when we express our views to someone with differing beliefs and perspectives.
What's wrong with Bush and Cheney? They made some bad decisions while in power. These decisions originated partially from the clash of their political perspectives and personality flaws with the real world. Cheney is not Satan and Bush is not Hitler. But, enough people who disagree with the fundamentals of Bush and Cheney's end of the political spectrum have over-used the Satan/Hitler angle that using such a reference even in pure jest is enough to associate one with a certain political bent that many people right-of-center find disagreeable.

I thought those characters looked familiar! Sorry to hear that things have soured in that friendship; I recall it being a very good one at one time. I've more-or-less lost contact with them too. Haven't really heard anything from them since getting married. I send a Christmas (are we still allowed to say "Christmas"?) card every year, but haven't gotten one back in a long time. Ah well...
