Sketch # Coffee Girl Tigress 03
Style influenced by the Art Nouveau period.
Wikipedia: “Alfons Maria Mucha (July 24, 1860- July 14, 1939) known internationally as Alphonse Mucha, was a Czech painter, illustrator and graphic artist, living in Paris during the Art Nouveau period, best known for his distinctly stylized and decorative theatrical posters.... He produced illustrations, advertisements, decorative panels, and designs, which became among the best known images of the period.”
To me, Alphonse Mucha is the artist of the Art Nouveau time period who drew all the “pretty girls” in his stylistic way. And I’m sure his works has inspired many artist afterwards such as manga artist Kōsuke Fujishima (also a well known artist of the Ah My Goddess! Series as well as some video game character designs for Tales of Symphonia). While people focus on the pretty girl models, people tend to overlook the graphic designs in the background which he tends to fixate on that usually have natural elements to them.
His works are definitely very “commercial”, and very “pop art”. Art for the commoners, and it could even be found on some food packaging. Some people love his works, some people Pooh Pooh it for being “low brow”, but I think he created an amazing legacy.
Continuing the Coffee Girl series for coaster designs (my place is running low on coasters, so my boyfriend suggests “why not design our own coasters?”)
