EDIT: Made a touch bigger so that the shadow wasn't cropped at the bottom.

Personally, I'm more of a Jason Kidd kind of guy-- San Francisco, you know?
But totally a blind passer. Gotta say, it's one of my favorite moves to watch when I got to games. At Furry Fiesta '09, I went to a Mavs game and saw Kidd throw an amazing no-look. Looking the D right in the eye while coming up court, absolutely no hint at all he was watching anybody else, and then-- flings it up in the air to his side without turning his head and Nowitzki smashed it down for an alley-oop. Blind pass into the alley-oop.
And that's why I had to make this character.

It's the fur colour and the shape of the muzzle. The fur's a bit brownish, and normally i associate that with coyotes. Wolves' muzzles don't normally taper towards the mouth at such an acute angle like that, normally that's only foxes or coyotes.
Well, besides that, this piece does look good ^^ And why would they sport fros? I personally think they make you look silly :P

Good points. Double-P originally used a bluer, grayer color, but I asked him to brighten the picture up, and maybe the warmer light made his fur look browner.
Jack Howell's afro was something that
ebonyleopard delighted me with when I commissioned him to draw the entire Thrust team. It was never my plan for the character, but now I think it's a perfect styling for him. Jack Howell is supposed to be a rebel in his family. The Howells are an old family of New England wolves, reaching all the way back to Colonial America. They're also a prestigious family, wealthy and privileged, with strong ties to the furry universities in the Cambridge area. Jackson's parents are both professors, and his litter mates all have doctorates or are working on them. He was always an active pup, never willing to sit still for classes or study, preferring to be outdoors and use his body and paws as much as his head. When his parents demanded he commit to his studies, he did, but quietly joined the school's basketball team on the recommendation of a school coach. He excelled at it and continued to play in college while studying for a physics degree, pacifying his parents by keeping straight A's while being a huge contribution to the school's team. (He earned the A's, the school didn't fudge his grades.) But he horrified them when he graduated and put his name into the FBA draft instead of going into post-graduate school.
I think the Afro captures a bit of his rebel sensibilities. And it's an homage to one of my favorite NBA players, Josh Childress, who also got straight A's at Stanford University while being one of the finest basketball players to come out of that school. And who has a beautiful Afro.
It's a showy haircut, to be sure, so I understand while people have strong feelings toward it. But I personally really like the Afro. Kind of like dreadlocks, it's a proud, unapologetic way to show off the natural characteristics of someone's hair, and I find that to be much bolder than dying it unnatural colors or shaping it into spikes or something.

Wow, so basically a preppy rich kid decided to go into sports instead of university? Wow, gotta give him credit for that. Getting straight A's and excelling at sports is a very hard to find combination IRL, and I guess the afro does capture that rebel part of him.
Afros I guess are kinda like Macs, some people have very passionate love for them, others balk at the thought of them (and they are stupid :P). Apples also stand for a certain kind of individual, much like an Afro. Ok, I agree with you on the dying and spiky hair thing. Afros are unusual enough to say that

A few things.
paperplane is the truth.
The hair you put on Jack Howell's head is the best thing anyone's ever done for that character.
I'm really glad to hear someone comment on the quote. Big thanks, E-Cat. *ballerhug*
