I thought I'd give it a go doing something more colourful in paint. All I can say is, I'm gonna stick with traditional x.X

Gimp is a free, Photoshop-like program. I don't have it, but I hear good things about it: http://gimp.org/
There's also a program called Paint.net, which I have used and it's pretty good (it's free, too). It's kind of like Paint with layers, which are really useful, if you've never worked with them before. There are a bunch of other useful features, too: http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html

I know this is like WTFLATE but there's a really nice way of getting smoother lines with MSP. If you use the pencil tool, do two lines rather than one and fill them, so you get nice thick and smoother lines XP. Also, with MSP, never save as a jpg, always either png or gif. I'd not reccommend gif though since MSP has a habit of reducing the colours and screwing stuff up XP.
