Reminds me of something the the fanfic Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons. Where a storyteller tells the heroine Blackjack about a good natured individual who gave away all his money to the poor, his food to the hungry, and even his clothes to the cold before dying in his travels. And without him those given money soon spent it and were poor again, the hungry starved, and those not given his clothes froze to death.
The moral of it being that if you give all you have to your own neglect then those who depend on you will suffer.
Fitting here too I think. Even the best surgeon in the world could not perform life saving operations every moment of the day without destroying themselves in the process.
