She walked quietly through the garden, brooding on things that had been worse left unsaid. The day darkened on into cool evening, but flashes of the previous hours percolated through her brain, leaving her ears burning hot with embarrassment. The sight of him, bent over the other woman's head, whispering sweetly... it was too much to bear. It was all unfair, the younger part of her thought; it's your own fault for waiting so long, the older chided.
A dull glimmer pulled her attention to the diminutive and somewhat unkempt hedge maze. What would shine in this gloom? A step forward, followed by another - always, the shine was in front of her, turn after turn, and soon she was quite lost, the maze seeming larger and wilder than ever before. Finally, with a shout of frustration, she swept her hand forward, truly only expecting thin air, or perhaps a teasing firefly...
... her hand closed upon something that whirred warmly. She peered at it, cautiously. It was old. Metal. Tarnished. It had a mirrored surface, beneath the grime. She rubbed at it a bit, and peered more closely. Movement visible, and not her own. Or perhaps - yes, it was her own body she saw in the mirror. But she was dancing, happily, hand in hand with him. Delicate music, flutes and violins, purred lightly from the tiny thing.
She sat down, her eye to the window of another world. She sat - for a very long time...

The Darkened Mirror pendant may show you dreams, what might have been, what could be. If you have no heartbreaks or wishes, perhaps it will simply show you as you are. If you have no imagination, it will most assuredly do you no favors, but perhaps it would do you no harm. We must all be wary of how long we dwell on might-have-beens.
