Short first chapter, what there is of it so far, for a personal writing project to keep the cobwebs from gathering in my head.

Story is set on earth, so no one saying, "Nice idea for another world out there." You decide on how it works as the story progresses, though there's a pretty big hint about it right at the beginning and in the title.
Sorry if it seems a little emo. I'm just trying to establish how one character sees herself in the world around her though. The next part isn't as bad. You'll see when I tack it on later.
