He acts as though there is little wrong with him... I know he will gladly go on a walk tomorrow morning, and be upset when he is turned around, but he is getting bad, breathing is hard work by the sound of it... I am sad to say goodbye to him tomorrow, but it really seems like punnishment to live...

Why? Why is anything like that necessary when he's not acting like he enjoys life any less? You wouldn't kill another family member just because of a condition like that.
