EDIT: I think this scene needs a little clarity. Alexander is an alchemist with very dark ambitions, and intended to use Kathy for a project, but since her mother, Genna, took their daughter to safety, he decided to use her.

Looking on this from the outside, it seems as though she would have been wiser to stay with her parents, unless she feared putting them in danger as well. in which case, I'd probably be in the same boat.
