Because I'm determined to teach myself how to make a greater variety of foods lately, and since I've joined
~FACCC2 and want to contribute to the group, I've decided to start posting pics of food I've made, along with the recipes so you can try making it yourself! The first of this ongoing set will be the delicious consomme I prepared a couple nights ago as a light dinner for me and my family. This is a pretty versatile dish that even a newbie cook would have trouble messing up, so you can make it just like I did or embellish a little and it should turn out good either way!
Ingredients:
- 1 260ml can of consomme broth
- 3-4 large yellow potatoes
- 1 small green onion bunch
- 1/4 cup of flour
- 1/4 tsp of salt
- 1/3 tsp of black pepper
Optional ingredients:
- Butter
Recipe:
1. Wash the potatoes in a strainer, then peel them and let them sit in the strainer for about 5 minutes.
2. Chop up the green onions, then set them aside in a small bowl.
3. Cut the potatoes into as many small cubes as you can.
4. Empty the consomme broth into a large pot, then fill the can with water and pour it into the pot while gently stirring, and begin to cook it over medium heat. Hold onto the can for later.
5. Add the flour to the broth to give it some volume and make the colour more presentable. Stir or whisk it in well so there are no unsightly clumps.
6. Add the potatoes and about half of the green onion pieces, keeping the other half for later.
7. Turn the heat up to medium-high and add another 1/2 can of water, along with the salt and pepper.
8. Place a lid on the pot and cook for 15-20 minutes, removing the lid to stir the soup every 5 minutes or so.
9. Once the soup is boiling, turn the heat down to low and let it simmer for another 10 minutes. Take a toothpick and try poking it through a potato chunk--you'll know it's time to turn off the heat if the potato provides little to no resistance. If the potatoes aren't quite right yet, give it an extra 5 minutes or so.
10. Once everything is cooked just right, turn the heat off and let the pot sit for a minute or two to take it that residual stove heat.
11. Divide the soup into bowls and, if desired, gently stir in 1 tsp of butter, making sure it fully melts and combines--this is for those who want their serving a touch milder, since the black pepper will add a bit of a kick to the soup.
12. Sprinkle some of the remaining green onion on top of the soup if you want it to look a bit fancy or just personally enjoy that added crunch and extra green onion flavour.
Et voila, your consomme is ready to enjoy! <3
