Thank you so much! It is indeed a ghost, it haunts the sword. When blood gets on the sword it opens up a link between the ghost and the holder of the sword. The ghost thirsts for heads, and with each head it becomes more powerful. When it has enough heads it will become material. In exchange for collecting heads the ghost gives Sloan some of its power, increasing his speed on the battlefield, but at the same time the power clouds his judgment. It preys on his emotional weaknesses and that's how its able to coerce him. That's my little story about them, anyhow.

I can't really figure out whether the ghost would take his body or manifest a material body of its own. I'm not even sure who the ghost is, exactly, or what its aim is once it is material. -Shrug.- I don't think he'll succeed, then again, I don't know where the story will take him. Hopefully he has sense enough to destroy the sword before its too late. But my characters are always surprising me.
