Plus the minor point that if it's a planetary space sation, there's a good chance anything you throw away will hit you again half an orbit later. In low earth orbit, that's about 45 minutes time - which IIRC was within the theoretical limits of survival when the species was first discussed.
You know, that's something they never seem to cover in sci-fi battles fought around planets. All those bits of destroyed spacecraft, spent cartridge casings, un-impacted projectiles and so-on are going to be all coming 'round to say hello again, across a very tall band of space.
