This little guy is Yume's best friend. He is loyal to only her and they have a very strong bond. Jiro often comforts Yume when she is sad and listens to her when she speaks and (according to Yume) speaks back to her. Yume is able to understand animals, so she actually can be often seen talking to him.
Jiro has two forms which he can change into whenever he wants (this is thanks to a great spirits blessing. They blessed this little guy with the ability to do so considering they aren't actually able to transform, Jiro is a special case. More on that soon). One is the small form you see here, the other is a large feral-like kitsune with three tails. When Jiro is transformed, he has the ability to fly, enhanced strength/speed/durability/endurance. He has the magics of illusion, transformation between his two forms, and multitudes of different elements. These creatures aren't fully understood yet in the world of Edesa, but they don't transform. Normally they are seen as docile creatures that folks often consider good luck, especially if one chooses you to take care of it. These creatures are also seen as wise and intelligent.
Jiro's story:
Jiro was born in the floating continents in the Haizen region. He was born the runt of his litter and was very weak to the point he was on the edge of dying. When the time came for Princess Yume to go through the ceremony that ends with her getting possibly chosen by one of these creatures, she was chosen by Jiro which caused a lot of concern from the royal family. They saw he was so weak and wouldn't be able to protect her at all, looking on the verge of dying. Jiro had a feeling about Yume and was instantly drawn to her, knowing that she held wondrous power deep within her, sensing it deep within his core that she was the one. He reacted faster than any of the others although he could barely walk to get to her. All of the creatures reacted to her in the end, something that's never happened before in the history books of the world. Yume was still young when all of this happened, but she immediately picked up Jiro and gave him his name. After the ceremony, all the elders and royals gathered to discuss these events that took place and their concerns for the frailness of Jiro, debating on putting him out of his misery.
Yume wasn't going to let anything happen to Jiro. He chose her, that's her friend and her companion. She had already formed a strong bond with him right away. Once she was left unattended, she slipped out of the castle grounds quietly with Jiro. She decided to try to get help for Jiro the only way she knew how, so she headed to the ancestral forest where all of her ancestors spirits inhabit the trees. The ancestral forest is a place of absolute beauty and serenity, a place for reflection and for wishes to be heard. Stepping stones led to a massive flat stone covered in grass and flowers in the middle of the water. The water had floating lotus-like flowers on it's surface which twinkled and lit up when she approached. Beautiful trees of varying colored leaves adorned the edges of the small lake, said to hold the spirits and power of her ancestors. Yume always had her nose in a book, wanting to gain as much knowledge as she possibly could from anywhere she could get it, and it would pay off now. She read in an old text that she managed to get her little hands on that the ancestors would answer the call of one of their own who is pure of heart with noble intentions in their request. Yume carefully stepped with grace across all of the stones leading up to the large one, she then took a bow before stepping onto the large grass and flower covered rock in the middle of the lake and sitting down with her legs folded under her and Jiro resting on her lap.
She looked around her at the trees and said aloud, 'Great ancestors, I call upon you to please help Jiro and give him strength... He chose me out of anyone and I want to do whatever I can to help him. I fear that my family will end his life due to him being so sick and they don't deem him worthy enough... But I do...' Her voice started to break as her eyes filled with tears before she continued, 'I know I could have chosen any creature, but I chose Jiro because he chose me first before any of the others and he deserves to live a life...' Her voice finally broke and she started to cry, but in that moment, the trees started to move although there was no wind. The leaves sounded like bells chiming on a breeze and suddenly moonlight surrounded her and Jiro. She heard a voice as if the whisper of the wind, 'Child, you possess great power, greater than we have ever seen before. We see your heart is pure and your request is noble. Accept our blessing...' As the voice trailed off, a lotus flower started floating in a direct line to the stone where Yume and Jiro sat, glowing brighter than any of the others. Once it hit the edge of the rock, she picked it up out of the water and looked down in the bloom. She only read about this in legends of old and it was only rumored to be legend in itself, but it's an incredibly powerful substance called 'Eluris', or 'Moon's Tears'. One of her tears fell into the substance, causing it to glow like moonlight even brighter and unknowingly soon bond her and Jiro together as friends forever and make him even more powerful. She coaxed Jiro to drink the liquid and once he accepted it and did, he started to glow silver like the moon above and the winds swirled around them, power being poured into him from the ancestors. After a short period, the glowing stopped, the trees quieted back to gentle chiming, and the lotus flowers dimmed down. She placed the lotus back into the water where it belonged carefully and thanked the spirits around her for their blessing and for helping Jiro. The last thing that she heard was a whisper in the winds that said, 'Make us proud.. with the life you choose to live... You are more powerful... than you can ever dream...'The tree leaves chimed to them peacefully, signaling that a wish has been answered and a blessing has been received.
The ancestors favored Yume and love her deeply, this much was quite apparent. She looked down at Jiro who seemed completely healed. She carried him as she gracefully navigated the stepping stones back to the shore. Once they were out of the sacred ancestral grounds, Jiro hopped out of Yume's arms and dashed about happily, never being able to move well due to being so sick and frail. He jumped, frolicked, and even did twirls. Yume could sense that he was now blessed and powerful, full of different magic of her ancestors. She held her arms out and he jumped into her arms, licking her face as a sign of affection and feeling grateful for all she's done for him. Suddenly, Jiro glowed and quickly jumped out of her arms and onto the ground. Within a second, he transformed into a massive feral-like version of himself (at least 2m in height), emitting the power she sensed that was deep within him. He laid down in front of her, showing his obedience, and also nudging her to climb onto his back. Once she did, he stood up and pranced around before escorting her back to the palace grounds. Jiro quietly pledged to himself that he'd always be unwavering in his loyalty to Yume and serve her for his entire life for not giving up on him, giving him a life to live and believing in him. The rest is... as we say... history. :D
