- UTO - Back to Basics - Part 5
Eric had finally got to sleep, when his evil alarm clock woke him instead of the nightmares. He couldn't handle just how soft the beds were yet knew they weren't that great after all. This was bootcamp for them, it was made to be hell, well a lesser hell for the humans but hell none the less. His routine followed as like yesterday only with his Gaurdian looking over her shoulder at some other Lupini with some humans. The new group were all medic or in training to be one all chating away on random topics.
He swore one of those voices sounded familiar to him, he heard it somewhere and knew it well. But he'd wait for their turn within the simulautor anyhow. It just seemed to be too early to bother. That voice kept on nagging him like Emily, It bugged him more and more till he almost got up. Shara knew some of those humans within the medic group from the invasion as they helped drag out survivors after battles. She even knew that one young lady which had been looking for her husband, a term she knew was akin to mate.
"Do you known them?" He asked sipping his coffee. Shara swiffled her head back to face him.
"A few of them are friends and I worked with a few of those humans for sure.. Why ask?" She knew Eric had his reasons too but felt like something bad was about to happen after what transpired yesterday. He knows she's skepitical for good reason but it felt too personal after.
He sighed almost in defeat, "My wife ran out on me during the first few days of the invasion and I've been stuck wonder where and how she is." Shara felt a little confused.
"Then why don't you use the archive systems? They have been updated last week so you could find her there." Shara hoped her solution would work but she knew this fear well.
Eric took another long sip of coffee trying to plan his words without crying and she sensed his saddness. It even draged one of the medic to look over at them.
"But what if she's dead? That's what stops me, I can't bare that after all this time." Eric just wanted this talk to be over, it was far too personal to be in the mess hall.
But Shara wouldn't give up on his hopes and now had a personal mission. Lupini were know for their sense of smell. "Do you have anything I could use for a sent?"
Eric rubbed his head heavy thing, "A pair of shoes, a bag is about all I can think of." He felt shakely on such a request. His heart wanted this answer yet his mind didn't. A endless pointless battle of emotions. Humans just had the time think of what they've seen and greif for loss. It wasn't uncommon for them to hide these issues that only got worse. Shara had heard that from some medic friends and was seeing it first hand in her Charge. She was going to help no matter what, even if he protested her she would.
"Her name was Emily and she was the only one for me. It just seemed so perfect then." He started to remose on those beautiful days of love filled joy, that was his loss. Shara hated to see her Charge in such a sad state but reconized the name from somewhere.
"Did she even work with the 'Red cross'?" Shara asked careful now to upset him even more. Eric brighted suddenly. "She did!"
He nearly shouted then blushed quiting down.
"She did and I think she could likely be a doctor or medic, maybe still on earth helping. Emily was so selfless and kind.." He sighed staring off again lost in the past. Now Shara had a little more to go off not being much was something. She knew a young women that had companied them many times working with survivors helping the UTO aid human outpost and hidden hideouts.
"I knew a human with the same name but I can't be sure, I'll look into it for you." She wanted to comfort him just before breakfeast was over. Eric gave a somber smile.
"Thank you Shara, really, I own you one." He hugged her palm or at least tried.
"Own me what?" She cocked her head like a dog. He laughted, a good sign.
"Just a human expression, it means I own you a favor in the future for helping me." Eric still had to explain a lot but she was learning fast even on their first week of Basic.
A drill sergeant came in to annouce their tasks for today, hopefully nothing too bad.
"Everyone! Today is the physical!" He shouted out making everyone jump. Many soon goaned realizing what was to happen along with many humans. But what was worse was the next bit of news.
"Charges and Guardians will have seperate but equal Physicals holding up to and above UTO military standards!" That set off many to become nervous leaving their partners but they had to function as a team and indilivtals too. This test would prove the latter.
"Looks like today got interesting." Eric said glumly now chugging the end of his coffee still not away nearly awake or in a great mood. Shara simply nodded.
"Good luck anyway." She wished to Eric and he nodded back. This was just another day. It was just another long test but they'd be fine. Humans are reslient to a lot of things.
