That's Carl, Hershel's new age neighbor. Always in a friendly mood, but you can never quite tell if he's being sarcastic or just stoned.
Here we also get slowly introduced to some of the vorish mechanics of this world.
The living houses are called rockmaws. They were used as treasure depots in the old days, nowadays they rent themselves out voluntarily as living space. Their intelligence is low, they can't move much and don't possess any particular skills so the choice in occupation is limited.
There is quite a run for rockmaw rooms from dwellers, it's up to the rockmaws to decide who gets to live inside them. Their sessile lifestyle requires maintenance on the tenant's part, cleaning and such, lazy or messy dwellers won't get to keep that residence for long till the rockmaw kicks them out.

Technically anyone could live in a rockmaw, they got an additional storage stomach which used to be like a safe for valuable items, gold and such. They're living treasure vaults.
The dwellers can survive inside any gobblers due to their immunity to stomach acid. However a gobbler that gets eaten by another gobbler would get digested.

If that’s the case I wonder 💭 if that makes all the clans jealous of the dwellers based on the fact that the artificial race can survive in the stomach because of some unexpected coincidence while they can’t risk being swallowed by any of the other clans due to that vulnerability that stayed with them even after the end of the warlocks 🧙♂️ and their era of starvation?
For example clans used as soldiers had their strength increased, clans used as guardians were given a strong instinct to protect.
Most of these alterations were only minor and built on the nature the specific clan already had. Too much magical tinkering with body & mind has unpredictable side effects. As was the case with the dwellers...

Were some of the clans who went through the major magical 🧙♀️🧙♂️🧙 alterations and got the side effects still able to have a chance to live their life through a normal span of time or did they have to be put down in act of compassion and mercy before their condition grew worse with time?
That would depend on the severity of the side effect, if someone became an actual danger then they would have definitely been executed. In general the warlocks wouldn't have wanted anyone to think they're incompetent, failed experiments were disposed of quickly & discretely.
Further experimentation? I’m guessing that they didn’t care how far they took their experimentation or how cruel that could be during that time as well? The more and more I learn about the dwellers lives before they reach the point where they are now the more I feel sorry 😞😢😣 for them.
