Also, the drawing is superb. I can't recall who Edward Gorey is but the style looks familiar.
if only they could be as mild-mannered as the respectable spider... i love arthropods, but i always feel like house centipedes are stalking me
thank you! gorey had a pretty extensive lineup of pen/ink surrealist macabre work, though i think he most recognizable work is the gashlycrumb tinies - a rhyming alphabet of illustrations depicting how each child died. he also did a lot of book cover illustrations, though, so i suppose it might be tough to pin down the memory (๑╹◡╹๑)
Here's a hint: It wasn't a spider and it definitely wasn't my cat's tail.
