5 - The Fox Apprentice
Back in December 2020, I started doing character design practice as a way for me to shake out of an art block and to warm up to doing commissions. Eventually my mind went to doing a tactical rpg ala Shining Force, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics etc, with furry characters.
I'd like to try and make it some day, but for the time being, here are the character designs I've been making on the weekends for fun!
Well he feels like a protagonist, doesn't he?
I figured this character would likely be an apprentice for the old wolf hero we originally designed! Young and determined with a lot of room to grow. I tried to incorporate elements from the old wolf hero to this fox such as the loops, the fur trim and the banded armour!

As soon as you pointed out the similar elements between this fox and the wolf, I went down a rabbit hole looking for other visual motifs you included in these character designs, and holy crap there are so many of them. I think I counted over a dozen? Trying to find them all was fascinating and wildly fun--you did a spectacular job with all of these characters!
The ones I picked up were:
-Metal rings/loops
-Triangle pattern, especially (but not always) in red & blue
-Twisted ropes, sometimes bicolored, often used as belts
-Dress clothes (i.e. suit & tie) with armor incorporated into their design
-Hearts
-Very distinctly-shaped bells worn around the neck
-Tridents
-Blades giving off a colored aura (esp. your spellsword and gloomblade characters—I’m REALLY curious to see the connection between them)
-Glowing charms hanging off strings/chains
-Braids
-Glowing pawpads
-Large beads worn as bracelets or necklaces
-Ornate glowing spheres used as ammunition or as a “supply” of magic
-Weapons with a “braided” pattern on the handle/grip
I imagine some of these were probably just design choices rather than thematic elements, but they definitely really fit in well with the rest of the designs!
