RPG stuff: Mhar Byranster
Another past map I did with Greg for the Mhar Fantasy RPG world, Byranster is a royal castle and market town located in the Kingdom of Anaeland. The town is effectively three separate settlements sometimes at odds with one another. The northern section is run by the castle constable on behalf of the crown while the southern settlement (built around the central market) and semi-urban villages that surround it (most off the map) are run by a cadre of merchants and guildmasters along with elected officials. The central part is controlled by the bishop and is dominated by the cathedral with its famed relics of local saints.
In addition to the shops and hostelries for pilgrims here, there are a number of small colleges that board and teach students who go into the church or become royal clerks and the like. Many are the second and third sons of nobles and gentlemen who can claim the protection of orders of the church even though they haven't taken final vows (and may never take them) to avoid legal entanglements for their antics (known in Medieval history as the "Town and Gown" conflicts).
The local has all sorts of uses for adventure ideas.
--In addition to getting caught up in a town vs. gown brawl or riot, there are a number of learned men around town to consult for sage advice, shops for buying and selling books (perhaps the rare magic scroll or clue to hidden treasure).
--With all the pilgrims passing through, the town crawls with all sorts of pardoners and relic-peddlers selling fake healing potions and fingerbones of saints. Perhaps some of these relics might be the remains of a serial killer's victims?
--To the east lies the vast expanse of Byranster Forest, a royal hunting domain. PCs can run afoul of Royal Foresters or bandits that prey on pilgrims heading to the town (the town and surrounding villages are well patrolled but beyond a league? not so much). There are also rumors of fey living in the forest--perhaps a fey noble has lent a fey-pact warlock a few sprites and pixies to create havoc in the town during a major religious festival/fair (because of course Fey and the Church don't get along).
--An offer to steal a book or a minor relic for a wealthy collector or a rival town or uncover a plot to do so. In the Mhar setting, "living" gargoyles aren't elementals but statues possessed by celestial spirits blessed to guard holy sites (a fact not widely known so PCs might be unprepared). Stealing a relic or committing murder or other horrible act in the cathedral might cause one or more to come after the villian, tracking them down; perhaps they might catch witness to a gargoyle tracking a thief and despoiler but be unaware of its true purpose and alignment.
--The town, with its access to young academics, is sometimes covertly scouted by the mage orders looking for promising young student that also shows sign of the Gift that can be recruited as a magic apprentice. But possibly the covert recruiter isn't a mage but a warlock or a possessed cultist working for the Black Order of Scholomance (and yes, WOW players will remember that name but Scholomance is an actual medieval legend, a covert infernal school that moved around Europe promising forbidden knowledge and black magic spells but with the cavit that the last one out the doors on the last day of the semestor would never leave but would be claimed by the Devil).
