The PCA SECT was now officially underway, a huge tournament to span all the grades, build hopes for it’s sixteen contestants and shatter them for the fifteen who didn’t make it. It was the dream of every battle freak in the school and was gonna draw a huge crowd… unfortunately the latest match-up was likely gonna end in seconds… or a fatality.
“A freshman, they set me up against a FRESHMAN!” Lorissa Fernacio the lairon senior muttered, heading towards the arena. “How the hell do they choose these match-ups? Drawing Lots? Ah well, I guess I get a free ride… sucks to be the kid though.” Having recently beaten the hell out of her former team she was looking to shake off the label of “Joke” Team Doom had gotten her and show everyone what she was REALLY capable of… if she had to squash some brat it was okay with her, she’d at least try not to hurt him too much.
Nearing the arena she passed by a slightly open locker room door “… your dead, you know that right?” followed by a pathetic whimper. Curious and early enough to the fight to afford to lose a minute or two she pushed the door open a little. Now normally a large steel type girl isn’t exactly the stealthiest or easiest to miss mon, but the people in the room were a bit preoccupied.
“When the hell did they start a daycare?” Lorissa thought as she looked at the mon who appeared to be anywhere from age five to possibly age ten. There was a chubby worried looking Pichu, and a bored looking munchlax chewing on a candy bar, they were looking at a teddiursa kid who looked like his world was ending. “W-why d-don’t you just g-give up?” the pichu piped up “Y-you said y-you didn’t know about h-having to fight o-other grades when y-you signed up anyway…” he finished as the munchlax bluntly added between bites of candy “It’ll keep you from getting killed.”
“You dun get it.” The teddiursa muttered mournfully “I can’t just give up!” head in his hands “Why not? Better then having a lairon pop your head off.” the munchlax girl muttered, getting a shudder from the two boys. “So that’s my opponent… too bad for him.” Lorissa thought. It was pretty stupid that she’d have to face a teddy bear of all things in the first round, but she wanted to win.
“But… my momma’s in the audience! I can’t just quit! She said she’d be cheering for me and she was pwoud of how stwong… err… I mean proud of how strong I must have gotten!” Petie argued, trying to convince himself more than them “You also tell her you signed up by accident?” Jane asked, making Petie look down and shake his head “You want her to see you get killed?” she asked again, still sounding bored with the entire thing. Petie shook his head again “Nu… but… I…” he sighed a little, not even able to argue.
“Chuuuuuuu…” Andrew sighed softly before reaching into his backpack and digging around for a minute “W-well then… h-here…” he said softly before handing what looked like a flame patterned headband to Petie. The Teddiursa took it and looked confused “Um… thanks?” he said looking it over, expecting Andrew to say that it was lucky or some stupid thing like that. “I-if you aren’t gonna g-give up then p-please use that… it’s a F-Focus Band my d-dad gave me when I t-told h-him I started a t-team…”
That got Petie’s attention, it was a pretty valuable item and he knew how much Andrew admired and worshiped his dad… and he was GIVING him this “I-it’s just a l-loaner so please d-don’t rip it too much…” the little pichu squeaked “B-but I h-hope it helps… I don’t w-want to see y-you get hurt…” he said before giving a timid and sad smile showing how nervous he was. Jane just watched this silently, but she’d stopped munching on her candy bar.
Petie looked at the band for a minute before tying it around his head “Thanks…” he said, giving Andrew a smile that said he was just about as confident as the pichu was in this. Lorissa decided this mini soap opera wasn’t worth her time and resumed heading back down the hall “Least he’s got friends… still sucks to be him though.” Still planning on winning this match whether she had to stomp on a teddy bear or not.
As her audition into the Sect, Lorissa beat the stuffing out of all three of her former teammates, in front of the roaring crowd. Thanks to rumor and word of mouth nearly every battle freak at the school, had come to her match expecting to see another beatdown. The stadium was packed.
Since Petie was a freshmen, and a relatively new one at that, he wasn’t a big enough name for anyone outside his friends to know him… the crowd had no clue who Lorissa was fighting. Meanwhile Petie’s “Cheering Sector” consisted of his close friends, a surprising amount of girls, his team members, and his mom… the 8’1” ursaring womon stood out in the crowd.
The ref for the match was a grovyle, rather new at his job. He was willing to bet even the BEST ref in the school had never overseen a match as one sided as this, least not since that whole Team Jet vs. Team Red incident “Better keep the medics on emergency standby…” he muttered before turning on his microphone and pulling himself up to full height.
“Alright everyone!! Lets get this match of the PCA Summer Exams Combat Tournament started!! First we have a senior and former member of Team Doom.” The crowd snickered at the name of one of the most mocked teams in the school. “Lorissa Fernacio!!!” he shouted as she entered the arena to the loud cheers and screams of most of the audience. They were eager to see her cave in somebody’s skull. Petie’s fans meanwhile looked nervous and his mom looked horrified.
“And her opponent…” he paused for a moment to keep his composure and not make a comment about this pairing “A freshmen and member of…” he blinked and looked at the announcement card again in shock “Oh you have GOT to be kidding me… er… a member of Team Pre-K, Petie Liratten!!” he quickly finished up realizing he’d accidentally spoke into the mic. The little Teddiursa shakily walked into the arena his friends and family cheered for him as loud as they could, the rest of the crowd was dead silent.
Then angry shouts erupted “A FRESHMEN!!?” “WHAT THE HELL IS THIS A JOKE!!!?” “GIVE US A REAL FIGHT YOU MORONS!!!” This crowd had come to see a brutal fight. Any support for Petie in the audience was drowned out, in fact the sheer outrage drowned out everything.
Taking the near riotous moment to talk freely the ref leaned over to Petie “Kid, I don’t know WHAT god you pissed off, but if you have a brain in your head you’ll do the smart thing and call this off like NOW.” he said and vainly attempted to be heard over the audience and regain control…
“Idiots…” Lorissa muttered as she looked at the fury of the crowd. She wanted to prove she wasn’t a joke and what did she get? A teddy bear opponent and a stadium full of blood thirsty two year olds throwing a tantrum “Kid, I’d do as the guy says. I’m here to win, even if I have to step on you to do it.”
Standing there, partially deafened from the fury of the crowd and shaking like a leaf, Petie gulped, drew himself up to his full unimpressive height, and shook his head. “L-lets do this…” he squeaked out, voice rising several octaves from sheer terror. Lorissa just shrugged and the ref shook his head and muttered “Stupid kid…” before letting out a loud whistle into his mic.
The piercing sound and its reverb silenced the crowd for a moment as everyone winced “NOW! If I can have your attention… lets start the match! Are both fighters ready!?” he shouted, looking first to Lorissa then to Petie giving the bear one more pleading look. Both fighters nodded their heads.
“Okay then!! FIGHT!!!” he shouted as the crowd roared louder. Petie charged Lorissa full speed and did a baseball style Faint Attack slide into her legs hoping to knock her over. The resulting metallic thud was painful to hear, as was the pained yelp he let out as he clutched his foot.
Not impressed, though willing to give the brat some credit for trying, Lorissa grumbled and lightly kicked the little bear. She might want to win… but there was no reason to be a sadist. She’d try not to break any of Petie’s bones. The “light” kick was enough to throw Petie back, showing the huge difference in power between the two. This further enraged the crowd.
“CRUSH HIM!!” “RIP HIS HEAD OFF” “SHOW THAT KID WHO HE’S DEALING WITH!!!” the audience funneled it’s displeasure at the match up onto Petie. His friends were cheering and holding back a few of their numbers from attacking the nearest screaming idiot. His mother stared in fear and horror as her youngest child coughed, clutched his gut where he’d been kicked, and slowly got to his feet.
Slowly trudging over to Petie, Lorissa was more annoyed than anything else. The screaming crowd was getting irritating. As she got close Petie let out a battle cry and tried to Fury Swipe at her… his claws clinked against her metal skin. He winced in pain and stumbled back as a few of the tips broke off.
“You have a death wish don’t ya kid… or are you just too stupid to quit?” Her fist glowed a little as she swung a Rock Smash, trying to hold back. Still sane enough to want to keep his skull intact, Petie ducked under the blow and grabbed onto Lorissa’s hand, trying to use his judo styled Counter to flip her.
Unfortunately judo or no judo twice your size and probably five times your weight was still more then he could handle. Lorissa couldn’t decide whether to pity the kid or be more annoyed as he attempted to flip her over his shoulder. The crowd roared in anger “RIP HIS HEAD OFF ALREADY!!!” “DON’T YOU KNOW HOW TO FIGHT!?!!” “KILL THE STUPID BEAR!!”
By now Petie’s supporters had switched from cheering for Petie, to trying to keep their own folks from strangling the rest of the audience, to cheering for Petie and trying to keep his mother from bull rushing the arena. It was taking most of them to manage it.
Growling a little at the crowd’s fury Lorissa suddenly whipped her hand to the side, and since Petie was still holding onto it the move hurled him across the arena like a rag doll. He let out a cry of pain as he tumbled to a halt, scrambled to his feet, and panicked. He was trying to think of something, ANYTHING he had left to use “Let me guess, your last move is Charm right? Don’t even bother.” Lorissa said, deciding to put an end to this pathetic match and charging Petie “Just give up already!!” she shouted.
Doing what was arguably his first “smart” move of the match Petie let out a shriek of fear and took to his heels. The much smaller and lighter teddiursa outdistanced the heavy lairon. The thought of being killed motivating him to run faster. “KILL HIM!!!” “MOVE YOUR METAL ASS AND CRUSH HIM ALREADY!!!” “HURRY UP!!!” The crowd grew more and more eager to see Petie destroyed.
Gritting her teeth Lorissa ignored the deafening shouts and slammed her foot down on the ground in a weakly done Earthquake, cracking the ground around her foot and causing tremors through the arena floor. Petie cried out in terror as he hit the ground hard, bouncing to a stop. The world still spinning he tried to drag himself up as a large shadow loomed over him.
Petie opened his mouth and let out a horrified squeak. Tired of this fight and aggravated by the insults of the idiots in the crowd Lorissa delivered a full force, Strength powered kick to the little bear’s chest, hoping to end this stupid fight and move on.
As the teddiursa smacked into the arena wall with a crash and tumbled to the ground in a heap the screams of the audience were momentarily blocked out by one, panic and anger filled cry “PETIE!!!!!!!!!!!!” his mother howled as she attempted to rush into the arena, the crowd in front of her slowing the giant ursaring down.
Wincing in pain as well the ref cleared his throat “Eer… w-well… it seems we have a winner folks.” He managed to stutter. Taking a moment to listen to the shouts of the crowd before mustering up the guts to call it “Winner of this round of the SECT is… no way…” he muttered as he stared at the unbelievable sight before him along with the now silent and stupefied crowd.
Slowly, ever so slowly pulling himself to his feet, the Focus Band wrapped around his head glowing, Petie got up. He was breathing hard, bruised, and by the looks of things in poor shape, but thanks to the Focus Band he’d somehow managed to remain conscious… and alive.
“That… that should have broken my ribs… or my organs… or something…” Petie thought as his vision swam “Why am I still breathing…? Wait… what were Focus Bands supposed to do again? ” He tried to puzzle through exactly how Andrew’s gift had saved him. Lorissa clenched her fists in fury at the audiences furious roar.
“HOW THE HELL CAN’T YOU BEAT A FRESHMEN!!?!” “DAMN IT YOU TEAM DOOM REJECT DO SOMETHING RIGHT ALREADY!!!” “CAN’T YOU EVEN THROW A DECENT KICK!?!!” A few empty soda cans and other pieces of trash were thrown her way. The fury of the battle maniacs boiled over at this latest development. The weak attempts by the ref to calm the audience were ineffective.
Lorissa’s metal skin creaked under the pressure of her clinched fist. She’d dumped Team Doom because those idiots were dragging her down, making her a joke like them. She’d joined this tournament to show she wasn’t a joke, sure the scholarship and class credit would be great, but it was mostly to show what she could do… and now THIS happened? NO! NO WAY! NOT AGAIN!!
She slowly approached the dazed and weak teddiursa, her teeth clenched and a furious look on her face. As she loomed over Petie and he could barely even focus on her she felt something between pity, anger, and disgust. She slowly raised her fist and looked down at her small opponent, one blow, just one blow and she was in the second round of the SECT… how the hell was THIS making her look any better then Team Doom did!?
“JUST FINISH IT ALREADY!!” one particularly bold guy shouted as his empty soda can clanged down next to Lorissa’s foot. “SHUT UP!!! JUST SHUT UP!!!!” Lorissa roared, loud enough to drown out the audience, as she stomped the can two dimensional “I DON’T NEED THIS!!! YOU IDIOTS CAN GO SHOVE IT LIKE THE REST OF THOSE DOOM MORONS AND GO TO HELL!!” she shouted, finally having enough. She came here to get respect, to show what she could do, NOT to slaughter a stupid brat in over his head for the pleasure of a bunch of battle obsessed sickos. She was DONE with the tournament.
As the lairon stomped out of the arena, after giving a look of fury to the silenced audience, the ref just stood there. The grovyle had NO idea what he was suppose to do now. “Um… uh… w-well…” he did a quick glance around the arena “Ah…. since… since Lorissa has left the arena… um…” he took a gulp, not sure he should say this “Petie… Petie Liratten is the winner by default!” he finally managed to say, to the loud cheers of the little bear’s fans and the stunned silence of the rest of the audience.
The medics rushed into the arena and helped the dazed teddiursa onto the stretcher. His vision swimming all Petie could hear were the ref’s mutters of confusion and disbelief, his friends cheering, and his mom loudly swearing she’d NEVER let him do something this stupid and dangerous again. He still couldn’t believe it… he lived… he hadn’t gotten killed… and somehow he WON. Wait… he won? He actually WON!? … the little bear was too worn to even begin to figure out how that had happened as he closed his eyes. His last thought before he passed out being a reminder to thank Andrew for the Focus Band… and maybe treat the pichu a little better in the future.
