As the train made its way through, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Dakotas it became obvious that the daylights tired were not wearing evenly
to correct the trem problem the daylight was taken off the train at Omaha and for the first time the freedom train went on display with diesels for two weeks the Union pacific which was just completing maintenance on its own steam engine on Omaha offered to let the foundation use it to pull the freedom train as luck would have it both the 8444 and the daylight were ready for service within hours of each other the 8444 wouldn't be needed, but the obvious opportunity to double head the two engines was more than any railroad official could resist. On October 12 1975, the two classics were lashed together for the trip to Cheyenne where the 8444 would remain as the daylight headed to Ogden to rejoin the freedom train.
