So this is a recent character-themed picture I worked on awhile back as I've been wanting to draw more of Spike and Kai together 😊 I'm gonna share some background story context about this piece but if you don't feel like reading, that's totally fine and thanks for viewing!
So this is set back to when Spike and Kai first met. As I explained in their Character Reference Sheets, they both met at the local gym they went to where it was love at first sight though the two were much too shy to talk to each other until they accidentally bumped into each other and Spike took that opportunity to finally break the ice and talk to him. From that moment, the two exchanged numbers and began hanging out and getting to know each other a little more though while this was happening, Kai started to feel insecure and unsure about the situation because in his experience, guys like Spike (big muscular guys) were either never attracted to him or they only wanted him for sex and nothing more and he began to fear that Spike was gonna do the same thing to him and that he wasn't truly interested in him.
Then the scene in this picture happens where Spike finally mustered up the courage to ask out Kai on a real date and this made Kai's insecurity come out to where he couldn't help but tear up. He broke down to Spike telling him how he felt. That he felt that Spike didn't really wanna be with him and that if they got together, Spike would never have a normal life to where people would think that they were odd pairing and that eventually the disapproval and potential heckling from others would get to Spike and make him want to break up with him. You see Kai was already taken aback that a guy like Spike was actually interested in a non-muscular built guy because in his experience, most bigger, Muscular guys like him were mostly only interested in other Muscular guys and not lithe little twinky-types like him, let alone him being a Goth and he felt that this "odd" dynamic would get to him even to want to leave him at some point.
But after Kai let out how he felt about the situation, all Spike could do was smile and reassure him that he was truly into him and that he really didn't care what others thought about him or their relationship. "I'm not dating them, I'm dating you and that's what matters most to me. All I know is that there's sweet, pretty little kitty standing right in front of me who I really like and wanna get to know more of hehe" he says with that warm smile he always gave to him and Kai just couldn't help but crack a soft smile through his tears.
Spike holds out his hand and this was a big deal to Kai because as said before, the guys like Spike who only wanted sex and nothing else would never dare to be seen in public with him and seeing Spike not only be more than happy being seen with him but also to hold his hand, gave him the confirmation needed to know that Spike was being sincere. He smiles through his tears and accepts the gesture and it was from here where the two became inseparable.

Oh okay, that makes more sense. Yeah Kai had been through quite a bit when it came to dating and Spike truly is the best guy he's ever been with where he sees him for more and adores him for who he is. So the relationship is pretty solid between the two.
