Spyro - Toasty Character Design
I've decided to tackle the first Spyro game ever made and reinterpret it as if it were going to have a modern day "live action" (read: hyperrealistically animated) film adaptation. We can all sleep easy knowing this will never happen, right? Right?
FINALLY we get to some of the minor bosses, my favorite part of this project! I imagine that these guys would be little stepping stones in some undefined character arch for Spyro if they were in an actual film. Anyway, Toasty is one of my fave bosses from the original purely because he's so very well thought out. Like, what other game features a character who's the equivalent of a pick up item going rogue and trying to duke it out with the player for the injustice of being used as said pick up item? Sure the boss fight sucks (all of Spyro 1's boss fights do), but the idea is still so fresh.
I know that the remake makes Toasty look spooky, more Nightmare Before Christmas then Collectathon Platformer, but I can't see him that way. He's intimidating in that he's taller then Spyro and moves unnaturally, but I can't be afraid of a cute pumpkin-headed scarecrow being puppeteered by an angry sheep. It's physically impossible for me to do. So instead I tried to lean into making him look hand (hoof?) made, all discarded old clothes, metal undercarriage, and literal puppet strings.
