I finally got this guy out on paper. He's one of several characters that I've had in my head since the beginning of the year, but haven't found time to put on paper.
Ciraxis is Spartan based. He wields Spartan weapons and wears Spartan-like armor. As much as I love the movie 300, his gear is going to be a little more like historical Spartan armor then the "barely there" armor that was featured in that movie.
Special thanks to the creators of "Deadliest Warrior", for giving my references to go by for this character.
Armor not shown in this picture because I wanted to show his markings. I also think his shield is a bit small to be Spartan-like... I'll have to fix that in his character sheet.
No "This is Sparta!" jokes, please. They're a bit overdone... even though I'm planning to use one on his character sheet. >_<

I really like Ciraxis' design the smoothness of the muzzle and the frill on his head is a nice addition along with horn/spines. I really like that rosette pattern to his skin. I think the rust edge on his frill is a nice touch along with what looks to be a hint of blue on the outer edges of his wing tips which is a nice add in with his eye coloration. I would agree with your assessment of the shield being a little small but I love the design work on it. Nice job!
Since you're so into history I'm going to recommend watching the TV show Deadliest Warrior.
Basically they take two warriors from history who never met on the battlefield, take an in depth look at their weapons and armor, then match the two against each other in a simulated battle.
It's worth a watch just to see ancient weaponry (properly) in use! Lots of fun.
Recommended episodes to watch include:
Shaolin Monk vs Maori Warrior
William Wallace vs Shaka Zulu
Aztec Jaguar vs Zande Warrior
Vlad the Impaler vs Sun Tzu

Don't often watch "Deadliest Warrior", but I enjoy that other "Warrior" show...forget the name, but it was hosted by the former Green Beret. Out of those, I liked the Aztecs the best. It was really amazing how they were so able to fight with such simple materials, and how effective said materials were (obsidian especially).
