Over 1000 years ago, Princess Skysparkle lived underground, together with her parents and twin sister. Her family was hiding from Chaos and Disarray, two of the scariest monsters to ever exist. Chaos and Disarray used to rule the world. Chaos was called the "Father of Monsters"; Disarray was called the "Mother of Enemies". With hearts as black as night, they sought to destroy love and hope -- and replace it with hate and fear.
Back then, unicorns were a despised race of creatures. Chaos and Disarray wanted to drain every last unicorn of their energy. And many of their subjects were willing minions. Most unicorns who had not been caught were hiding underground.
One day, when Skysparkle and her sister (Stellanova) were nearly 8, they sneaked off and started exploring the underground world. They discovered many poor and oppressed creatures working in the underground mines. It was as their father described it. They decided they had to bring a ray of hope to these people. Unfortunately, blowing their cover caught the attention of Chaos and Disarray.
The two tyrants cornered Sky and Nova. The sisters were demanded to give up their powers -- or else they and their family would die. The father (Seth Appleheart) told them that this bargain wasn't worth it. If they gave up their powers, they would give up all hope. Moreover, our creator would not be happy with them -- love demands us to stop evildoers when we need to do so. All that Seth asked of his daughters was what he was willing to do for them.
Chaos and Disarray decided to make Seth pay for his courage. They smashed him into the ground, blue liquid splattering out of him. By all appearances, Seth seemed to be dead. The two monsters decided to mock the grieving daughters. That was their last mistake.
In their rage, Sky and Nova discovered the courage they never knew they had. If their father would die for them, then they would kill Chaos and Disarray for him. In doing so, they became the new rulers of the unicorns. From there, they would start to build a kingdom of friendship for all creatures.
Fortunately, Seth managed to survive. But it took the help of some unicorn nurses. His bones were shattered, and his blood had to be replaced. It would take years to make a full recovery from his injuries.

In a dark cave, an earth pony lies on the rocky ground. His unconscious body lies in a pool of splattered blue liquid. His name is Seth. A life bar appears just above him, with one last bit of life left (as indicated by the small red rectangle).
An eight-year-old Princess Skysparkle hovers above the ground with her twin sister, Princess Stellanova. Both of them are alicorns. Their wings look surprisingly big compared with their bodies. Back then, they did not yet have their cutie marks.
The sisters' teeth grind in anger. Their eyes glow white with rage, as tears stream down. With their horns, they fire great blasts of power offscreen. Sky's is bright yellow; Stellanova's is bright violet.
Seth is a ground pony. He is lightish orange with orangish brown spots and hooves. His hair is dark brown, somewhat messy and overgrown. Seth's cutie mark is three seeds arranged in a triangle; the top seed forms a sprout with two leaves.
Skysparkle is a white, slightly pinkish, alicorn. Her hair is long and wavy with a few big curls. It reaches all the way down to her hooves. She has a great big bang that can hide her right eye. Skysparkle's hair is blue like the sky -- with three shades of cyan/blue and one golden yellow stripe. Skysparkle's hooves are deep pinkish purple.
Stellanova is a dark purplish gray alicorn. Her hair has four stripes: from bright blue to dark blue -- plus a warm light silver stripe. Nova's hair is much shorter than Sky's. Her bang reaches only down to the bottom of the neck. The back of her hair curls a little below her neck. Nova's hooves are bright magenta purple.

It is one of my favorite pieces that I've commissioned. Sky and Nova learned their "magic" from their mother. But it was their father who taught them to stand up for what they love. The mother initially fled the scene when her daughters were trapped. But she returned once she realized she would lose everything she loved otherwise.
Sky and Nova couldn't help but feel momentarily betrayed by their mother. This, perhaps, made their father's display of courage all the more compelling. That two little girls would show such fearlessness is perhaps a little beyond comprehension. It's as if they understood something with their hearts that they couldn't with their heads.
Seth did not have the powers of his wife or daughters. But he did not fear his weaknesses. Seth was no macho man, but he was no pushover. He led his family by the power of his example and convictions.
