A former lady friend of my got my dogs hooked on coffee. One day, I stopped at the local convenience store for a cappuccino, then made another quick stop in another store. When I got back to the car, the lid off the cappuccino was missing and the foam cup was half its original height. Jessie & Callie played innocent in the back seat. My car smelled like vanilla & coffee for weeks.
I don't have much personal experience with dogs but I've been around them enough to see the interactions with loving owners...er...partners. I do, however, have a great deal of experience with cats and the old adage of "Dogs have masters, cats have staff" is very true. They know what they want and, if they don't get it, they have ways of getting your attention. But they do show affection as you can see on my page.
You've given me some ideas old man...I just have to find time get them on paper. LOL

I can attest that, while our cats do indeed consider us staff, they are also quite good at telling us what they want. The most talented is Py, the only female of the bunch. She's developed quite the repertoire of soft, heart-rending 'mews' which I mostly translate as , "Why won't you throw something so I can chase it? Don't you love me?"
I try to resist, but usually I fail. And I must stop whatever I'm doing and try to make her happy.

Ceasar Millan and...um that 'my cat from hell' guy can attest to. Every single case of the crazy dangerous dog or a crazy dangerous cat...it's the owners doing!! (Same could be said for crazy dangerous people too)
Your heart WILL put its shape upon the world, cats n dogs remind us of this.

That was wonderful and enjoyable to read. As you said they are talking the question is are we listening?
Having helped out friend's out with their small wolf pack in the 80s helped me a lot when we got Sky our first Alaskan Malamute rescue it took a bit of time for him to understand he wasn't top dog. All the little things were clues to what was going on in his mind. He got very good at reading me too. Hard to be stressed or upset when you have an 80 pound malamute being a lap puppy.
If he was doing something wrong all I needed to do was growl at him if it was bad show fangs and growl... his behavior would stop. Most times he became the jester. If he got in trouble he would take it out on his squeaky.
All my dogs have been expressive it's only the last three that I really could understand clearly for the most part.
