In anticipation of the sequel that's coming out in December (I cannot fucking wait!!!), I watched Tron a while ago. Afterwards, my mind filled with disks and neon, I resolved to do some fanart. And what better subject than my favorite technophile mouse? I can totally imagine Gadget and Dale being equally into Tron and watching it with huge grins (while chip sits on the end of the couch and rolls his eyes).
This was one of my most complicated drawings to date. I downloaded a ton of reference pictures of what Yori's costume looked like, then sketched with two different pencils to get the lines the right thicknesses. I didn't even try to ink it. There was no way in hell my trusty Sharpie could handle such thin lines. Instead, I scanned the sketch and meticulously traced each line in my MSPaint-equivalent graphics program. I also had to do the rings separately to not overlap lines. The colors took an awful lot of fiddling to get right.
Finally, I sent it off to the incomparable
Wolfblade, and he did some amazing light and shading effects.
I'm really damn happy with how this turned out. ^__^

<snerrk> Actually, it's called Graphic Convertor, for Mac OS 9. It's pretty much supposed to do just that; convert pics from one format to another. It's painting capabilities are limited, but I've been using it long enough I've figured out how to make it do a variety of tricks.
>Loved 'Tron' as a kid, although when I saw it again recently I felt it had lost something.
The visuals are gorgeous, yes, but I'll agree that as a movie it's a little dull in parts, it could use some more explanation and the characters could be more developed. Still, it deserves credit for being thoroughly unique and still looking damn good even today.
>Sequel sounds interesting, if undoutably unrequired.
I dunno. I think it makes a lot more sense than a lot of other sequel ideas. The computer world in Tron was cutting edge, and today's technology has gone so far beyond it it's incalcuable. What effect does this have on Tron's world?
When i first saw the trailer I was a little unhappy with the look. I was like, 'Everything looks like a Mac now'. And then all of a sudden I was like, 'Well DUH! Of course!!' :)

I hugely enjoyed Tron! A lot of what really made the movie for me was the relatively crude (compared to today) computer graphics of the world inside the computer - It really gave the feeling of entering into the digital dimension. The flowing streams of 1's and 0's occasionally appearing in the Matrix are a nice touch, but don't compare with the entire world being obviously "not ours". I especially loved the "spaceship" - if aliens should arrive in our 4D space from another dimension, that's what they'd look like.
Of course, there are always a few things you have to overlook, or there wouldn't be any story (such as the master computer simply deleting the protagonist's file if they got to be too much of a problem). Or could you compare that to MIT's "core wars" competitions? (In such contests, several contestant's programs are loaded into a mainframe computer at the same time, then each program battles the others to monopolize the mainframe's resources. The winner is the one which finally deletes all the competition).
BTW, what ever happened to virtual reality!? Remember those helmets with goggles (Lawnmower Man). Why aren't there Wii applications for that? Did too many people injure themselves walking into walls or tripping over the furniture?

I think that the hype itself killed it. There was all this talk of total immersion, and it being just like real reality (ala Holodek). And what did we get? Virtual Boy. Bleah.
