Woven: early chapter designs
some on-model redesigns for the upcoming Webtoon Original version of Woven!
I figure it can't hurt to share these! They're all characters who've been introduced in the first five chapters of the Canvas version of the comic :D
Theo, Ayse, Ayse's mom, Tolan, Ayse's aunt, and Ayse's two mischievous cousins.
...and a slightly unhinged dragon.
Rehashing the designs & style/process into one that'll let us comfortably produce 40-60 panels/week has been a surprisingly enjoyable challenge. We've been looking very very heavily at animation/anime cells. My work has often been compared to Ghibli, so I figure I may as well run with it, haha! The simple but effective styles and solutions found in some of my favorite animations have a lot to teach me.

Quality is technically sacrificed, as my shading has become a lot simpler! Before, I had painted the characters in a more rendered style, sometimes even painting overtop of the linework. But with the reboot, I'm working in a much simpler 'cel' style shading. Certain facial features have become a lot more stylised, too! Particularly the noses, which I've adopted a more 'anime' approach to...because painterly noses take so, so much time LOL
The flipside though is that I have a much easier time depicting the characters consistently! And...I think the character style in combination with the painted backgrounds produce a charming "animation screenshot" feel. So, while the art is "technically" less impressive overall, it is more consistent, more legible, and faster to produce! :D
It's also all inked and colored with the binary/'pencil' tool, so it's very easy to just select and fill whole selections, etc... The process is very different from how I approach standard illustrations.

I see! Well, looking at the panels you posted it doesn't look like quality has decreased. The "loss" in shading is not dramatic, the characters look very good! I'm very curious to see this style in action in a full comic.
Being able to be consistent easily sounds great too!
Didn't know noses were so long to paint, by the way, why is it?
