Hatching is messy business.
I'm pretty sure this is a normal (or "classic" as we like to say)

LOL cornsnake ;)
What would you like in a snake? There are a few good beginner snakes - are you more interested in a larger, slower snake (ball python would be good) or a smaller, more active snake? (cornsnake!)
I'd stay away from any of the big snakes (burmese pythons, reticulated pythons), though if you really wanted redtail boas seem to be good beginner largish snakes (they get about 12 feet, not usually considered dangerously large to an adult).
DON'T get any wildcaught snakes XP Sometimes if you go to shows people have tables with cheap adult herps of all sorts but they're usually all wildcaught and so not very tame / quite probably sick.

Rat snakes or corn snakes are your best choice (corn snakes are a subspecies of rat snake anyway).
Ball pythons are a nice heavy bodied snake that doesn't get too big to cause handling problems but i wouldn't recommend as a beginner snake due to notorius feeding problems.
As Ophidile said stay away from the bigguns like burms and retics but if you are looking for an impressivly large snake buy a common boa or red tail boa as a captive bred hatchling and rear it from that for best results in temperment
