Hey guys, I'm steadily starting to com back from my break. Still haven't started on the last commission, but I did whip up this quick story after working on it for a few days. No macro or anything like that here. Just a character introduction and a lore dump on Kajex.
This story is a bit darker than usual because of Kajex's... backstory partially explained here. Just giving you all a heads up.
It was a cold, cloudy Sunday afternoon. Kajex and Jade were currently going out after not really talking to each other for a while. They were just finished with some lunch and now just heading over to Jade’s place.
“I-I do honestly mean for me to avoid you like that,” Kajex awkwardly chuckled, “Th-Things just k-kinda… ended up like that for a while.” “Oh don’t worry one bit about that silly!” Jade smiled as she played with his ear, “It happens sometimes! I’m just glad Naomi was kind enough to push back your little date a week!”
Kajex flared up extra bright at that remark. He still wasn’t used to the fact that he was dating the girl of his dreams now.
“Y-Yeah I guess I did get a little lucky there,” Kajex blushed as he rubbed his head, “Sh-She was feeling a bit under the weather, but I’ll repay her with a date tenfold the one we had planned!”
Jade was squealing with an absurd amount of energy before she yanked Kajex into one of her signature hugs before swinging him around like a doll.
“And that’s why you two are So perfect for each other!” she squealed, “A little sweetheart and his supportive and lovable girl! I love it!”
Kajex wheezed slightly as Jade continued to walk and carrying him around like that, people awkwardly staring at them like she was his overbearing babysitter or something.
“J-Jade?” Kajex wheezed as he tried to break free, “I-I can’t breathe!”
Jade paid no mind to Kajex’s suffering for now while she onward, eager to take a look at shops and the like.
“I’m almost a little jealous!” Jade squealed as she took a turn, “Naomi is the luckiest girl in the entire world to have someone like you!” “I-I think I’m luckier though,” Kajex thought as he tried to hold himself together.
They were coming up to Cherry’s place now, but they were met with a very jarring sight. Rhys was taking Ace out the front door with Ace having on a cute little backpack. This hasn’t happened before.
“Why’s Rhys taking Ace out?” Jade asked aloud as the two walked down the street, Ace looking extremely happy and Rhys extremely annoyed.
Rhys let out a sigh of disappointment as he and Ace got to the sidewalk.
“This had better be important,” Rhys groaned, “I missed the premiere of the new season.” “Come on Rhys!” Ace smiled as he got ahead of Rhys, “You can still make it if you hurry!”
Jade eased up her grip on Kajex when the two were out of view, allowing him to finally catch his breath.
“Th-Thanks,” Kajex coughed as he rubbed his throat. “Oh I was suffocating you?” Jade awkwardly chuckled, “M-My bad Kajex.”
Kajex’s attention was caught elsewhere when a figure in a black hoodie strolled by.
“Huh?” Kajex awkwardly remarked, “Who’s that over there?” “What’re you talking about Kajex?” Jade replied as she looked in the direction of the figure.
They were slowly coming up to Cherry’s house while Kajex and Jade drew closer.
“Is Cherry doing some shady stuff?” Kajex wondered, “I do wonder where she gets her fundi-”
The awkward moment was cut VERY short when they saw a Zeraora wearing a white T-shirt with a teal lightning bolt pattern, blue, slightly damaged jeans, a pink flower attached to their right ear, and a bandage on their nose was standing in front of Cherry’s front door, but hiding their left arm as they tied the hoodie around their waist.
“A-A Zeraora?!” they exclaimed in unison, “A-At Cherry’s place?!”
The Zeraora knocked on the front door with their right hand as the two drew closer, their curiosity taking control over them.
“H-Hello?” the androgynous voice echoed, “M-Miss Cherry? I’m here for my arm maintenance.” “Just give me a minute!” Cherry’s voice echoed, “My brother only just left!”
The two were just at the sidewalk in front of the door now, completely enthralled as the door opened.
“What’s a Zeraora doing at Cherry’s place?” Kajex awkwardly remarked. “I have no idea,” Jade continued, “But I really want to know!”
Cherry stood at the doorway to gesture the Zeraora to come in while she took off her goggles like she was in the middle of building or repairing something.
“Go ahead and come on in Thorya,” Cherry began, “I got the equipment all set u-”
Cherry awkwardly blinked as Thorya stepped inside, revealing the two awkward spectators just behind them.
“Uh… hi?” Jade chuckled. “Fancy uh.. Meeting you here?” Kajex awkwardly continued “Miss Cherry what’s going o-” Thorya awkwardly began as they turned around.
Thorya jumped at the sight of the two while Cherry let out a sigh of disappointment, everyone feeling extremely awkward about the current predicament.
“I send Ace and the mutt out just to have my secret slip anyways,” Cherry sighed as Thorya slipped deeper inside, “Sounds about right.” “D-Do you know them?” Thorya asked in a meek tone. “You two just come in,” Cherry sighed as she gestured to them to come in now, “No point in hiding this.”
They both awkwardly looked at each other then back at Cherry.
“You want us to come inside?” Jade asked. “Just hurry up you two,” Cherry groaned, “I’ve got to send Thorya home ASAP and need to make sure you two don’t say a WORD!”
They awkwardly walked inside, Thorya still being cautious about their left arm.
“You know you could’ve… just told us to come back later,” Jade remarked as Cherry closed and locked the door. “No,” Cherry replied as she walked off, “I am NOT risking knowledge that the crown prince of the royal family is HERE!”
The two had their jaws drop at the mention of crown prince.
“Y-You know I’m neither a prince or princess miss Cherry!” Thorya stammered. “Yeah, I know you identify as nonbinary,” Cherry sighed, “But there isn’t a term for a nonbinary heir like you.” “C-Can you at least swap around the two instead of just prince?” Thorya replied.
Cherry was gesturing to the group to head upstairs, clearly in a bit of a rush.
“Y-You’re actually-” Kajex began. “Pl-Please do me a favor and don’t drive the point home,” Thorya blushed as they headed up the stairs, “B-But yeah, I’m the next in line to the Zeraora royal lineage, Thorya.” “A-And you’re coming to Cherry’s place?!” Jade replied in excitement, “F-For what?!”
They came all the way up to Cherry’s lab, where she had an unusual stand for some unknown (for now) device, with Thorya taking a series of deep breaths.
“Ready for me to disconnect the nerves?” Cherry asked as she brought out an unusual wrench. “I-I’m ready,” Thorya said as they held out their left arm, much to the shock of the two. “Wh-What happened to your arm?” Jade asked in a concerned tone. “Wh-Whoa…” was all Kajex could muster to say.
Thorya’s left arm from just above the elbow and down to the claw tips was completely mechanical and not at all normal.
“I… had a bit of an accident about 3 years ago,” Thorya meekly replied as Cherry clamped the wrench around the connecting piece that bound it to them, “W-With my Plasma Fists training.” “And somebody had to build them a new arm!” Cherry gritted as she twisted the wrench, “And there’s nobody better than me!”
Thorya let out a scream of pure pain as the arm fell off, but was caught by Cherry, catching the two off guard as Thorya clenched the spot where the arm was, trying to ease the pain even a little.
“D-Does it always hurt like that?” Kajex awkwardly remarked. “Y-Yeah,” Thorya huffed as they took a seat, “B-But I gotta live with it.
Cherry put the arm in the stand and began to open it up to perform maintenance and repairs on it.
“If you say so,” Jade said as she and Kajex took a seat themselves. “I-I know I couldn’t live with that if I had to pay that price,” Kajex continued.
Thorya took a few deep breaths before looking at the two, not used to having others than Cherry to talk to.
“S-So if you two know about… this,” Thorya began, “Can I formerly know your names as well?” “Oh sure!” Jade smiled as she shook off her worry, “I’m Jade and this little guy here is Kajex!” “H-Heh… yeah,” Kajex awkwardly chuckled.
Thorya nodded politely at the two, but something about Kajex’s name felt… familiar to them strangely enough. It was like they read it somewhere.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you two,” Thorya chuckled “I can say the same to you!” Kajex exclaimed, “I-It’s not everyday you can talk to royalty!” “Yeah!” Jade smiled, “I wanna tell everyone about it, but I'll keep the secret back!”
Thorya was completely fixated on Kajex, trying to recall where they heard his name before.
“Y-Yes please,” Thorya replied, “I-I don’t want people to learn where most of the miscellaneous spending goes.” “It goes to Cherry to keep your arm updated?” Kajex asked. “Nobody else could make an arm as one-to-one as a real arm than her,” Thorya replied, “And me just coming here can cause problems.” “Hence why I send Ace out every time they show up,” Cherry replied.
The room went silent for a brief moment, but only for a moment.
“Hey Kajex?” Thorya began, “Can I ask you something?” “G-Go ahead and ask,” Kajex replied, “What’s with your name?” Thorya replied, “It sounds… familiar.”
Kajex and Jade locked up at the question, Cherry becoming extra curious.
“You never did tell me what’s up with that funky name of yours,” Cherry replied, “Where does it come from?” “I-I…” Kajex stammered.
His eyes were sparking with the Dynamax glow for a split second, making Thorya remember exactly where it came from. It was one of the old files from Orrei’s top secret project files.
“Project K-4J3X,” Thorya replied, “You’re the Galar Particle generating Lucario aren’t you?”
Kajex’s heart skipped dozens of beats while Jade somberly nodded and Cherry’s ears perked up.
“Y-Yes,” Kajex stammered, “I’m Project K-4J3X.” “What even is that?” Cherry asked curiously, “It’s news to me.” “I-It’s because it was a TOP secret project conducted by the Dynadrone branch here in Orrei,” Thorya replied, “Only anyone who worked in the main building at the time and my family know of it.”
Kajex clenched his fists and on the verge of crying.
“It… wasn’t even supposed to happen at all,” Jade continued, “I-I know everything too because of how long I’ve known Kajex. He gave me the secret.” “Yeah,” Thorya continued, “It only started because of the former CEO of the company pushing one of their scientists into work or she’d lose her job.”
Jade petted Kajex’s back to try and comfort him.
“And she was overexposed to Galar Particles while pregnant with twins,” Jade continued, “And she was dealing with the loss of her husband the whole time as well.” “Wh-What the-?!” Cherry stammered in shock.
Kajex was on the verge of tears just trying to keep the memories back.
“I...I never would’ve guessed,” Cherry replied as she tried to continue repairs. “Yeah, your mother Leah is also experiencing her own unique form of Dynamax Radiation as well right?” Thorya asked. “Y-Yeah she is,” Kajex sobbed.
Jade held Kajex close to just let him cry the memories out.
“I-I know I’m just reawakening old trauma,” Thorya replied, “But you know that my family is partially responsible for turning a blind eye to your mother’s situation. Pregnancy and grieving isn’t a good mental and physical state to be in already to work with such a dangerous substance.”
Thorya thought more about the report they had read about it.
“There’s another thing I have to talk about though,” Thorya began, “The report my father showed me was… strange. It said that one twin was a stillborn, but two names were registered when your mother pulled you out. Kajex, you, and another name, Kaja. What’s with that?”
Kajex sniffled as he looked back at Thorya and Cherry became even more somber and curious about the situation.
“Sh-She… doesn’t like being mentioned,” Kajex replied as he winced in a sort of pain. “Is she here?” Thorya asked curiously, “I don’t underst-”
Kajex’s eyes turned pink for a moment to see that Kaja was in charge for the brief moment.
“I don’t exist, you got that?” she said before Kajex was in charge again.
Kajex collapsed onto the floor, coughing and struggling to stay on his knees, completely overtaking Cherry’s curiosity.
“Don’t talk about Kaja anymore please,” Kajex coughed, “She doesn’t like being called out like that.” “M-My apologies!” Thorya stammered, “I-I had no idea…” “This isn’t like multiple personality disorder,” Cherry thought, “Eye color shouldn’t change like that unless…”
Cherry immediately had a bit of a hypothesis for what this phenomenon could be.
“Okay hold the phone!” Cherry exclaimed as she set her stuff down and pulled out a pair of tweezers.
Cherry plucked a strand of Kajex’s fur from his cheek and stuffed it in a weird box that completely broke it down to the molecular level on another table.
“Wh-Why’d you do that for?!” Kajex whined as he rubbed his cheek. “Just checking something after that little display!” Cherry smirked.
Cherry learned something VERY interesting about Kajex’s DNA. There were actually two completely different strands existing in his cells!
“Aha! Just what I thought was going on!” Cherry remarked, “Two completely different sets of cells were in here!” “H-Huh?” Jade asked in confusion.
They all went over to take a look while Cherry got back to the last of her repairs.
“And… this isn’t Lucario DNA,” Thorya recalled, “That’s Zoroark DNA.” “S-So… we’re all tangled up like that?” Kajex asked curiously, Sh-She's just locked up behind my own DNA?" “Oh not for long!” Cherry snickered as she began to put the arm back together, “I’ll pull you two apart!”
Thorya jumped a little as they heard a familiar click put the arm back together.
“Can you actually do that?” Jade asked hopefully, “Just gotta refine my tech and I should be able to do it,” Cherry cackled as she held the arm in the air, “So you and that sister of yours sit tight! I got this!”
Thorya took a seat as they braced themselves while the others remembered that Thorya was there to not ask about Kajex’s past.
“O-Okay,” Thorya said as they took a deep breath, “J-Just get it over with so I can finish talking.” “Can do!” Cherry exclaimed as she put the arm in its socket and put the wrench up to it.
She began to tighten the connection. Thorya shrieking in pain even louder as before for a good whale before stopping and taking deep breaths.
“God the reconnection hurts a dozen times more than the disconnection,” Thorya huffed. “But you always come out alive,” Cherry shrugged as she put her equipment away.
Thorya took a moment before booting up their arm and going to a sort of contacts section on a built in touch screen.
“Mind if I get your contact information?” Thorya asked as the feeling in their fingers came back, “I-I’d love to see if I can provide you and your family proper… compensation for what happened when I take over for my father.” “O-Oh sure!” Kajex stammered, “I-It’d be an honor!”
Kajex and Jade gave Thorya their information before Thorya exchanged theirs.
“Well I guess I’d better be going,” Thorya replied as they slid their hoodie back on, “I-I doubt father would be pleased to hear I was late to my tutoring session again.” “I do hear the king can be a little… strict,” Jade replied as they headed downstairs.
They soon got to the front door with everyone a bit on edge about what’s going to go down.
“You’ll be fine if you run like a madman home,” Cherry joked. “V-Very funny miss Cherry!” Thorya stammered as they put on the hood, “But I’ll contact you all again when I can!”
Cherry opened the door after unlocking it, Thorya taking a deep breath as they stepped out.
“Especially you Kajex,” they thought before taking off like a rocket while holding their left arm, “You’ve been dealt a hand as bad as mine.”
Thorya was a LOT faster than they anticipated, already making the first turn to their home as they awkwardly stared.
“Now that that’s over…” Cherry began with a dark look in her eyes, “... I just need to double check something.”
She leaped into the air and dragged the two down to her level, making them both cough as they were caught off guard.
“My secret is safe with you two right?” Cherry said in a somewhat crazed tone. “P-Promise!” Kajex wheezed as he tried to break free. “C-Can confirm it!” Jade huffed as she tried to break out as well.
Cherry let them go, watching them drop to the floor and trying to get their breath back.
“Good,” she smirked as she fixed her overalls, “Now get outta here before Rhys and Ace get back. They’ll get even more suspicious if you two of all people show up!”
They both awkwardly got back on their feet as Cherry tapped her foot repeatedly.
“W-We’re going,” Kajex replied as he stepped outside the front door. “And we’ll be sure nobody knows a thing!” Jade exclaimed as she followed.
Cherry closed the door behind them as they both let out a HUGE sigh of relief.
“Note to self, avoid Cherry for like a week,” Kajex sighed as he rubbed his throat, “She’ll probably kill me.” “I wouldn’t say thaaaaat personally,” Jade replied, “But yeah, keep things a bit distant for a while.”
They both went on, ready to head home for the day after such a long-winded introduction they hadn’t planned.
However…
Cherry was back in her lab and cracking her knuckles to get ready for her latest project.
“Now for the REAL juicy part of today!” Cherry smirked as she gathered her blueprints, “Make a device able to split those two apart at the molecular level!”
Cherry started her designing and was full of untapped energy, excited to push her knowledge and skills to the limit for the first time in a nice, long while...
