Story time!!!
The profession of a hunter is often a dangerous one and can sometimes lead to the loss of limbs or even a life but to those lucky few who survive, the money is good but sometimes you have to stop and ask if it is truly worth it in the end. Drako already learned the hard way that sometimes being the hero can cost you everything.
Drako was returning from another dangerous solo hunt with a Shara Ishvalda, leaving his armor beaten up and damaged badly. As he returned, a group of hunters were also returning from their hunt as well, patting each other on the back as they all sat around a table getting ready to enjoy a victory meal. Drako looks at the group, shaking his head and walking off as being a black listed hunter who is only allowed to take on deadly hunts by the guild was universally hated by almost every hunter.
Drako went to leave the Gathering Hub but not before catching the eye of one of the hunters who had just returned. Momo, who was well known by hunters was wearing full Kirin armor, stared at Drako and wondered what he had fought to have his armor in such disrepair. Momo’s party noticed her staring at Drako and told her not to worry about him as he was a worthless blacklisted hunter. Curiosity got the best of Momo as she asked what caused him to become a black listed hunter to which one responded, “He got his whole party killed and then fled like a coward. He used to be one of the best but now he’s where cowards belong.” Confused as to what black listed hunters were, the other hunters sighed. “Black listed hunters are those recognized by the guild for being unworthy as a hunter but he’s a special case as the guild uses him like a tool, forcing him to do deadly hunts in exchange for not banishing him from the guild outright.”
All this new information was a shock to Momo. A black listed hunter being forced into hunts that could get him killed was something she never thought the guild would do. Momo wouldn’t believe any of this until she learned about it from the source being of all this so she decided to leave her party and follow Drako out of the Gathering Hub and into Astera just to see Drako sitting on a cliff side staring out into the beautiful view of the New World.
Drako sat there, looking at a small pendant that was the last thing he had of his family as he began mumbling to himself not Knowing that Momo was behind him. “I should’ve just quit when I had the chance. At least then the world wouldn’t want me dead.” Drako puts the pendant back in his pocket before standing up and turning around. Momo saw Drako’s face clearly for the first time. His face was cold and lifeless but his eyes showed that he was in a lot of pain from the previous hunt as he attempted to walk past Momo who stopped him. Momo stared at Drako as he looked back at her.
“I don’t have anything of value so I suggest you move alone.”
Momo slightly taken back by the comment lowered her hand.
“You’re in no condition to be fighting, especially with your armor being all busted up like that. Please go get some rest and get better,” she said.
Drako rolls his eyes and walks past Momo without looking at her.
“I don’t remember asking for your pity or concern so do yourself a favor and just leave me alone. Wouldn’t want your career to end before it starts by talking to me,” he said.
Momo was completely dumbfounded that someone like him used to be the best when he was so quick to snap at someone for just trying to help or show concern.
“Well, excuse me for not wanting you to get yourself killed. Too many hunters have already quit or died thanks to the recent surge of monsters,” Momo said.
Drako stares back at Momo with a pissed off look to his face.
“Do you think I give a shit about people quitting or dying!? I sacrificed everything for the guild only to be thrown away the moment my usefulness was no longer needed! I never wanted this curse to begin with but thanks to that Molten Tigrex from 5 years ago, I’ve lost everything!”
Drako's eyes began to fill with tears and through the cracks in the back of his armor black smoke began to flow out of them which to Momo was in shock as no hunter has ever done anything like this before.
“I lost years of my life just trying to control this stupid fucking curse but I guess me having it at all means I’m no better than a monster!”
Momo remembers hearing the same Molten Tigrex as it was classified as a hunt that cost all the hunters lives. The monster was still slain, which Drako claimed to be there on that hunt. It made that call false but there only way she would know the truth: to ask the not emotionally unstable hunter in front of her.
“They say that all the hunters were killed but if that really isn’t true then... what happened that day? Maybe if you set the records straight, you won’t be a blacklisted hunter anymore.”
Drako stares at Momo with tears still in his eyes. “You think I didn’t try!? That’s the whole reason I'm blacklisted in the first place, because I tried telling them what actually happened but no one believed me! They said there was no way a monster and a hunter would become one but I’m living proof that happened!”
Drako noticed the smoke and calmed down before looking at Momo. “If you truly want to know the truth then come to my room. I doubt anyone wants to hear my voice anymore anyways.”
Momo was more worried about Drako as if he got so emotional about all of this then it must mean that he has had to hold onto this for so long without being able to tell anyone about it. She nods and follows Drako back to his room. The walk there was full of hunters throwing rocks at Drako or people trying to get Momo away from him. But Momo was determined to know the truth and after a painfully long minute of walking they finally reached Drako’s room. He opened the door for Momo who smiled a little before walking in behind him and closing the door before locking it.
Drako looks at Momo before heading over to his armor stand and taking off his battered chestplate and putting it on the floor next to his bed but to Momo’s surprise he was wearing a tight fitting shirt. “So you really want to know the truth huh?”
Momo nods quickly as she sits down in a chair next to his table. “Please tell me, it’s not healthy to hold onto something so painful for so long and not tell anyone.”
Drako sighs as he sits at the edge of his bed and looks at Momo. “The records are indeed wrong. I know for a fact the other three hunters escaped to safety, I’m still alive as you could tell and the monster is very much dead but it wasn’t killed the normal way.”
Momo was confused as to how someone would be able to kill a monster without using weapons or the environment. “Then how did you kill it? I’m assuming the only one who killed it was you since you were the only one there as far as I know.”
Drako lays down on the bed and sighs heavily. “This will be impossible to believe but the monster saved my life. I don’t know what drove it to save me but after i collapsed it picked me up in it’s mouth and took me back to it’s nest and curled up around me. I felt myself feeling better but I thought that was my mind playing tricks on me until I felt it nuzzle my cheek lightly before it took its last few breaths but I assumed that it was just asleep so i wanted to try and get up and leave but my body was too weak so I decided to just take a nap and pray I woke up. Little did I know how much that nap would change my life forever because when I woke up hours later the monster was just gone. When I got up I felt a sharp pain in my back and I saw my wound was healing slowly but not from normal means but from the Black Blight. I was barely able to climb out of the nest but then I just felt myself almost begin to think like a monster and after that I don't remember anything for about a year.”
Momo was unable to speak after hearing all of this and it indeed sounded unbelievable but then again it would explain why when Drako was so emotionally unstable that he began to have black smoke come off him.
Drako rolls over and curls up on his bed before closing his eyes. “There, no you know the truth about what really happened that day. If your curiosity has been curbed then you are free to leave.”
Momo was finally able to come back to her senses and she realised that whatever wound on my back hasn’t been properly treated 5 years now so Drako must be in some serious pain. “Please at least let me treat your injury, if no one has treated it properly by now there is no way there isn’t a serious infection by now on your back.”
Drako raises his head slowly, knowing full well that there was no cure. “Do you really want to see it that badly? Even if there is no cure for what happened to me?”
Momo nods quickly before walking over to Drako and gently placing a hand on his shoulder. “I just want to help, even if it is just a little bit it’s better than being in pain.”
Drako stands up slowly and grabs the bottom of his shirt, his hands shaking a bit as he pulls his shirt over his head. He drops the shirt onto the ground before turning his back to Momo who was almost immediately brought to tears at the sight of massive claw scar down Drako’s back the glowed purple from how long the Black Blight Virus had been inside of him.
Momo barely holding it together covers her mouth with her hands trying not to cry. “How are you alive with a scar that massive? A wound of that size should have definitely killed you.” Momo moves one of her hands from her mouth to Drako's back and barely touches it. It is almost as if the injury itself still hasn’t fully healed even five years later.
Drako looks at Momo over his shoulder and is surprised to see her on the verge of tears as no one had ever shown this much sympathy to him ever since he came back. “Why are you about to cry? It’s just a little scar so there’s nothing to cry about.”
Momo without a second thought hugged Drako from behind. “I’m so sorry that you’ve had to suffer through all this pain alone for some many years. The guild has no right to treat you the way that you do when you’re a victim too. I don’t care if it takes you years to realise it but your days of being alone are over as long as I’m around.”
Drako began to hold back tears as well as no one had ever shown him this much kindness ever since that incident so the only thing he could think of doing was turning around and hugging her back before letting 5 years of pain out finally as he began to cry into Momo’s shoulder, happy that someone finally cared about him after all these years.
