The weapon is a railgun whose ammunition consists of a light ceramic and metal shell around a classified element which exists at absolute zero. Because the shell is exposed to a blast of 5000 degree F the heat and cold begin to react violently, with the supercool element drawing in heat rapidly though its insulator ceramic shell. The result being an implosion that increases in magnitude while moving along a path at supersonic speeds sucking in or otherwise causing damage to just about anything in its path.

The cannister seems to suggest some kind of liquid ordinance, but the size of the gun indicates otherwise.

I would guess the ammunition it uses is some kind of extremely volatile gel with a high explosive payload on impact. The weapon electrically charges the liquid, priming it for its unique qualities, and then expells the ordinance in single-burst "rounds" at very high velocities. Highly effective against armored suits and vehicles and moderately effective against Starships. High energy output means it can only fire one shot at a time.

Also, the cannister carrying the liquid ammunition is specialized, designed to house this volatile substance safely, and is probably hardier than the weapon itself.
