I have actually been toying with the idea of planting some hops in my little garden just to see what they grow like. We actually have a weed in the yard that has a bud very similar to the look of hops... and then again there is also one of my artistic favorites: Judy Hops...

that's what I read... it seems to be quite the ordeal to grow them, but they seem pretty darned healthy (can grow 12 inches in a day). it also says they come in male and female, but don't bother with the male because they don't produce. Still... if I was home brewing, that would be a cool thing to grow.

Yeah, I have heard that they can be quite tricky to grow and you've read enough of my articles to know that hops can go south really fast if not properly cared for from the ground to storage.
Luckily they are perennial, so you can get new cones off of a female plant each year with out needing a male plant. Now if you wanted to produce more hop plants or a crossbreed both sexes are needed. Although you do run the risk of getting a bunch of male plants, so unless it is for the crossbreeding, it would be best to simply buy female plants.
