Isioma, born in Niger and moved with her mother to france where she studied while her mother spent all of her time working, manual handling to ensure her daughter's bright future, daughter who later on moved to Rhode island and got herself a prestigious job, climbing the hierarchy while developing a taste for expensive stuff, a certain ruthlessness in terms of in work competition and eventually a complete and utter (unconsciously resentful) scorn of lower class people.

and though she regularly sends money to her family back in france and tries her best to hinder discrimination within her work-line, in some way she lost herself and forgot who she owed all of this to and where she came from.
