This is an elephant seal family; a small subsect of what is usually referred to as a harem. Seal involvement in project: light and dark is to help teach the player about the games environment, as well as to help train you in some of the games mechanics.

A certain key scene is involving them; it's used to encourage the player to evaluate certain ethics regarding captive transient orcas and how such things can contribute to mental horrors.
